Nearly everyone is addicted to thier phones. They don't have time for reading. Massive, overwhelming literal addiction of nearly the entire population. What could go wrong?

Quite right. Unfortunately, as with lead plumbing and nicotine, humans won't be willing to face the facts til the damage has been done. The dopamine hits feel too good.
