If you’re someone who still reads for pleasure, you are a marvel. If you’re able to unplug from all the chaos of our entertainment culture and disappear into the warmth and solace of a book, that is a rare gift and I’m very glad to know you.

Like we mention in our "Episode 11: The US Supreme Court: The Earl Warren Years & Jurassic Park": "Give a hoot! Read a book!"
Good post. Alas, it reminds me that years of screen time has destroyed my ability to concentrate on slowing down and reading one page after another. Having pleasure while doing it, is a bonus.
Every night before bed. Loving historical fiction as it’s a great way to learn about history
I suffer from that disease!!
I wish more people understood the benefits of reading, especially novels. It builds critical thinking skills, helps develop empathy, it inspires, builds language skills and vocabulary, and the list goes on. Importantly, a good book selection opens the eyes to cultural differences.
I’ve always been a big reader, but I think I’m gonna double my book count this year over last and it’s BECAUSE of the chaos of the world, not in spite of it. Sticking my nose in a book is what keeps me from doom-scrolling until I go insane. It’s self-care at this point. 😄
I have been struggling with reading for pleasure for a couple of years now. I'm too enmeshed in current affairs/ world news and it has worn me down.
It is the only thing saving my sanity.
Same.
Came here to say this
Saaaaame
Read Timequake by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. if you haven't yet. Perfect for every age of society.
Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries. Anne Herbert
I am more fortunate. I have reading and access to a sketchbook. I regularly get lost in both. Some recent examples of letting a pen go for a walk in a sketchbook. Meanwhile I am reading Bob Mortimer's second novel, "Hotel Avocado".
It’s a wonder
It certainly is a wonder how it is possible to lose yourself in the moment. The downside is you are in danger of missing your train, as I nearly did, if you indulge yourself in a drawing while waiting a while.
Some magnificent moment of life 🪄
Both are great ways to escape into a different world
They certainly are. Drawing around the house, views out of the windows, in the garden etc really helped get me through the Covid lockdowns & looking after my wife after surgery for womb cancer in the same period.
Those are great drawings!
Thank you. 😊
Wonderful ink drawings
Thank you. One was inspired by a school trip I helped on, the other by my holiday in the Lake District. 🙂
Those are beautiful!
Thank you. 😊
Not as good as his first book, but still great fun
I'm not quite half way through it but would agree that isn't quite on par with the first book. Getting the feeling that it is like many a mid point of a trilogy? A bit like The Two Towers in LOTR.
Same
My life really began when I found books. ❤️
And I don't own a TV... which is the best trade-off, IMO. 😁👍
My ability to do this has been shaky this week, lots of dnf that are no reflection on the books 😕
I have to read in bed to get to sleep at night. And it has to be fiction because all the nonfiction going on in real life is just not conducive to sleep. Reading works as well as any sleep drug with the benefit of no morning hangover.
Yay for reading. I’m also writing a novel… for the timeline where everyone loves to read and values knowledge and truth and being a good human. Can’t be too far away. 🩵📖
Love my mystery books
I’m reading a LOT of escapist fiction
It doesn't always happen nowadays 🥲, but I try to read daily 🥰🙌!
Only graphic novels
Escaping, from this ridiculous reality we find ourselves in, into a book is what’s keeping me sane these days.
I’ve always loved to read. The bookmobile was a big part of my childhood summer. Recently I’ve made a very conscious decision to rediscover that love of reading to calm my mind in these overwhelming times. The ‘breaking’ news cycle has just about crushed me & I will escape with a book more often.
I recently read Ender in Exile, as well as before that the Devils Alternative, both of which I checked out from (and returned to) my local library. It's slightly obscene, the self-congratulatory smug feeling of superiority I feel about having done so. I used to read a book a day before the interwebs
Current Reads: How to Stop Fascism, Game of Thrones, How to Be an Antiracist, A Brief History of Time, and Gulp. I want to read all the things and I jump titles based on my mood.
All: library funds are often based on public use to justify a budget. Come see us! We miss you. 😘
I can’t tell you how many people are absolutely delighted to see someone reading and walking instead of being on the phone.
See, it's sentiments like this that make me so self-conscious to be seen using my phone in public. If I'm in a waiting room and my phone is out, I'm reading an ebook! After being homeless 90% of my books are ebooks. It's just safer and more space-saving for me.
Library staff member here: I listen to a number of audiobooks too. There is no right or wrong way to read. Good on you for making the most of what your phone can do for you- and using it for beauty and joy.
This post gets you a follow. 🫶
Libby is the only thing keeping me sane.
Thanks to reading, I no longe screaming a bunch of 4 letter words into the void. Instead I scream 6 to 8 letter words and sound much more intelligent. Also, every time is a good time for Shakespeare insult.
😂
Just trying to make all the librarians proud. 🤣
Love my library’s ebooks.
That's exactly why I read, to escape reality for just a little while
Books have saved me.
i wish i had the patience and quiet of nerves to read again. i truly miss it.
Sometimes it takes a bit to let the day go and immerse in a book, but I am so grateful for being a reader and cannot imagine life otherwise!
Presently reading John Adams (David McCullough). As soon as I finish this, I will start a book on the American Revolution ( 1776 has been recommended to me). 🙏❤️💕
It is the only thing I have left.
Every night 🌌
It me.
💕
@cassabonita.bsky.social 😌🖤
I sure can. I do it as often as I can.
As a former intern at the Smithsonian Libraries, I am ride or die for books, Libraries, and all free public spaces where people of all ages can learn.
I need it like air and nature - especially now.
I’ve been spending more time with books lately as it is the best way to avoid doomscrolling. Lots of good authors out there with amazing stories to tell! I need something to give me hope for our future!
My husband used to deride me for "wasting my time" reading. (IOW not at his beck & call) Well, he's dead and I'm reading up a storm!$
I'm sorry for your loss. But, LOL!
🤷🏻♀️
😳
My ex was the same. He'd get so mad when I didn't hear things he said because I was so deep into a book.
I bet your dog doesn't mind a bit!
She doesn't. Neither do the cats. 📚
Same here. Nor the many plants, books, hanks of yarn and rocks I surround myself with.
I had a friend when I was younger who said 'reading books is for stupid people'. He was still my friend but he was also a dumb motherfucker.
😆😆😆
Time spent enjoying can never be a waste
Absolutely agree and adore your profile pic. Did you know that Patrick Stewart knits?
I’m reading LOTR again along with a couple novels picked up. I don’t think my other readings of it were the original text complete with typos like this recent reprint is 😃
Thank you
I’m reading The Briar Club. True escapism.
I started that on audiobook. Too many characters to pull me in and then I got distracted to something else. But it's the single most recommended book so I'm going to make a point to get back to it.
👍📚❤️
I have read books every day, at least at odd moments since I was 7 years old.
It’s really challenging right now.
Books keep me sane.
I have always been a reader and lately it has been a huge struggle. Audiobooks while I do housework have kept be sane, but reading physical or on my kindle has been hard.
Cock
Ha! I still grumble about the book at times too! But yes, pages are nice. Words are interesting and one story, for a good while, is a great way to be:)
I've been obsessively reading for pleasure for about nine months now. It's how I unplug. Right now I'm reading the novels. Heretical Fishing and The Historian.
Just read a whole book today. Louise Penny’s latest Gamache mystery.
I love books. I've read all my life, even when there wasn't time, to learn, to improve and to simply be entertained. To feel the page turn and anticipate what might come next. Nothing compares to a book.
I love books. Been reading since I was 10, its my escape from anxiety, chaos and boredom. I tried listening to audio books still do when I drive a long way but nothing is better than a thick book in your hands and being so engrossed that you become part of the story.
While cleaning out my mother's house, after she died in May, I discovered my father had 80 Agatha Christie books. 80! So I started with the first one written in 1920 and I'm going to read every one. Halfway through Murder on the Links right now.
It’s hard. I try. I’m in one book club where we meet quarterly. I used to read one book a week.
my mother was a big influence on me to be a reader. I love to read and still prefer a real book, not an ebook! Holding that book in my hands and turning the pages
I love reading so much, both print books and audiobooks. 📚💕
I'm new to audiobooks. My attention drifts. But I find them perfect for the gym or walks or tedious chores.
It’s a must
Still got a few.
That would be me. Never a day with reading unless I was too sick to do so.
You have to today to keep your sanity’
I would readily give up broadcast media and internet for my choice of books, and think myself a fortunate and prosperous person.
Bathrooms, bed, and the train help!
It’s a treat that I give myself every work day during lunch. 🙂❤️
What if the book is on my phone tho...?
Thank you.
I read every day.
I’m one of the few. I need the break from the real world. There nothing quite like a good 📕.
I’m not only able to, I have to. It’s part of my sleeping routine. I couldn’t sleep with all that chaos still in my head
Same here.
I read all the time & I’m glad to know you also.
So the thing is, I read dystopian and crime thriller novels, so idk what that says?😂
I am an avid reader for pleasure currently out of books! So, any recommendations are really appreciated. I like well written, not dystopian, nor horror nor tragedy, fairly fast-paced, linear any other genre novels.
I heartily recommend Becky Chambers' "Wayfarer" series of books set in humanity's future among the main sentient peoples of the galazy. Sci-fi that is wise, humane & nuanced. Series starts with "The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet".
I read a book a week. It’s takes my mind off everything that’s f’ed up in this country 📕
Always!
Oh! I need it every day! Such a pleasure....
I said to a colleague yesterday that I feel bad for my son and his peers who get no joy from reading books.
I hope to get back to that headspace once things stable out
Every day. That is the best part of my day. Getting in bed and reading. I also take time during the weekend, usually in the afternoon after my chores are done and take a glass of wine in my favorite chair (outside, if the weather is nice and cool or in my oversized lounger) and read.
I don't trust people who don't read!! 😉🦘🇦🇺🥰
It gets harder every day. My attention span is shot.
Been reading since I was in junior high I love British Irish Scottish Mystery African-American Fiction Literature, Stephen King and recently ordered Fictional books about OCD and Bipolar Disorders protagonist an LGBTQ Genre Currently reading Stephen King's Duma key #Booksky #QueerBooksky
Duma Key is excellent. King & Anne Rice are my favorite. I just finished Like A Love Story, 1980’s NY during the AIDS Crisis. It was heartbreaking and uplifting, told through the eyes of 3 teens.
I'mma get that Book I heard about that book
Why, thank you 🙏🏼 🙂
I rarely watch television.
I've gotten back into it since my baby was born. We got tired of the kid books we have, so we're going to the library regularly for new ones, and I get some for myself.
I've read three short books in the last month. I'm in the early pages of a Three Body Problem but I'm stuck in a dark hotel room with a snoring partner and no book light. No idea what "hard science fiction" is but it's good so far.
I’m always hearing how people don’t have time to read a book… for that, I have a solution: @harpers.bsky.social has a link on their homepage to subscribe. Every month, I’m delighted with it.
Does it count if it’s only comics?
Yes
I am not one of those but I wish I was. My country is in peril and reading no longer helps/soothes me. My brain is now on high alert everyday. Sleep is also becoming hard. Reading would be a godsend. Don't know to disconnect.
I’d be lost without books
I make sure to read as often as possible. While I love gaming, and I love visual novels specifically...nothing beats getting lost in traditional novels. I read thousands of pages a month most months.
This is the only way I’ve been able to cope with all that is happening, honestly.
When I see someone reading a book, I tell them they're an endangered species 😊
You are the gift for the day! Instant love for the way your write your thoughts ❤️
I cannot imagine my life without books. I read every day.
Life without books is unimaginable.
You too - Retired Librarian
Poetry or prose or non-fiction, what matters is the style. Simon Winchester is better than Lee Child. I read a biography of Dean Martin that made me weep with admiration.
That said, John Le Carre is better than Malcolm Gladwell.
I do.
My kindle, a daily doorway into extraordinary head spaces. I am never without it or the phone app. It's glorious to have multiple books open in virtual space. Mixed starter for every occasion. I get lost in there. Space. Time. Travelling in them both yet still home for tea. Retirement has delivered.
Same here ( I have a kindle, with kindle apps on my phone, tablet) and have prime and kindle unlimited with 41 books 📚 on it and 18 magazines
Love it, I am always no more than an arms width from immersing myself in another world. My hand luggage used to be all books. Now it's freed up for practical items while I carry a library in my pocket. Transformative.
And let's not forget those of us who write them amidst the chaos.
Reading gives me perspective on today’s problems by comparing this to the lot of humans in bygone eras. Especially helpful is reading about how people in the past coped with things. Lately I have read several novels about the French Resistance in WWII. Encouraging.
I am, I do, and nice to know you too.
I do, but in much smaller increments than I used to. It still feels good.
Me! Hi I love reading!
it's more like breathing...something you just must do
I gave a book about pigeons to a best friend….who introduced me to the best birds app ever…..she has a very inquisitive g/daughter and together, explore the outdoors. A winner. She loves it and now I wish I’d bought a copy as well. Poss from Waterstones??
Every night around 8 pm all devices are left to charge, silenced, in another room while I retreat and escape into fiction. Currently reading Fools Crow. I highly recommend it. An added bonus: there are many free little libraries all around the neighborhood.
Quick summary of the premise of Fools Crow?
Montana before and after 1870 massacre. Native life before and after white migration. The way it’s written, the way the Blackfeet, Crows etc would speak. Bear is called sticky mouth, peoples names like Fools Crow have reasons. White people were the migrants destroying life and culture.
Back’at’cha! 🤙
Graham Greene.
You don't know me. I don't know you. I don't think owls should be drinking, you boozey hooter.
I don't understand people who don't read for pleasure. It's pure joy for me.
I both read and write for pleasure. And host TTRPG games. :3 (Unfortunately, my English is not good enough yet to publish in this language, I fear.)
Now that I am retired, I get to read every day.
rereading pride and prejudice for the maybe the 40th time just because.
Right here with you 💚💛💜
If I couldn’t read and get away from the constant chaos I would be a basket case.
I don't get to read as much as I want, but I get to read more than most people I know, so I count myself lucky.
I read at the lake, so not only do I get enlightened, but god damn I have an amazing tan
No, it just means you're old (with some exceptions). Reading takes up a lot of bandwidth not everyone has today.
That's me! Instant follow:)
A guest speaker at the university where I taught said he read for pleasure every night before going to sleep, even if it was only 10-15 minutes. It helped calm his brain from the chaos of the day. I totally agree. (And as an editor, I read for a living. But that's work. I also read for fun.) 1/2
I can count on one hand the number of nights in the past decade I've gone to bed without reading. That includes travel and vacation nights. My mind just does not slow down unless I take the time to escape to someone else's life and words. What kind of people DON'T read for pleasure? 2/2
Reading for fun, is really good for everyone, reading for fun, actually relaxes me and makes me forget about the chaos all around
Actual books…no e-readers here ❤️
Hear! Hear! Me too.
2-3 books a week! I get anxious if I'm not reading something
I'm browsing for a book that will calm me down. Recently read Percival Everett's James and then Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, and I need a book that's got some laughs. Aha--Discworld!
Nice to know you, too! 📚🤓
Beautifully said. In an age of relentless noise and digital distraction, the ability to engage deeply with a book is both a quiet rebellion and a profound privilege. Reading isn’t just escape it’s connection, reflection, and restoration.
I read a book a day. It may be smut but it’s keeping me sane.
I started a book club for dudes and the general sentiment is that, yes, we get to enjoy reading again, but also hang out monthly at a new bar It's been a highlight of my year!
The moate is God's eye is my current location
It is my ✨coping mechanism✨
I read, not just for pleasure, but for my sanity. A good book is an escape, for a short time. A book exercises your imagination in a way that other media cannot. Every evening before bed I sit quietly and read. Only problem with that is sometimes I end up going to bed early hours of the morning
Me too!
Thank you as it’s nice meeting you as well! There’s nothing like curling up with a good page turner, touching the paper while engrossing in the story!
I feel sorry for those who haven't discovered the joy of reading for pleasure. It's one of the most amazing privileges.
I have read for pleasure my entire life, and now that I am retired I continue to do so. I am happy that my kids and my grandson also love to read books.
I go for a 10 km walk every morning, earphones in, listening to an audiobook. I go through <50 books per year that way. It is my happy place!
Pleased to meet you ....
Count me in - and thanks!
Lost the ability for a few years, thanks to the pandemic stress. Slowly retraining my brain and I'm delighted every time I finish reading a novel.
I need to do that!!!!!!
I feel this in my heart. Something happened to me and I just can't get back on track. I used to have a couple books open and switch back and forth. Now I'm lucky to get through the text on a news article.
It is worth the effort!
I need tips please! I used to be a voracious reader of books and journals but 🥺 no more.
I have to set a specific time for reading a physical book - with my phone out of reach. And I am retraining my brain with fun books! Nothing too serious. Good luck!
Yeah, if it's no screens it's no screens. I don't want to start looking up the history of some place mentioned in the book until I'm done reading for today.
Thanks!
How bout if I wish I still read for pleasure tho
If anything, my reading has doubled since T47. My total TV time is way down because I have to manage the cascade of bull$#it. I have both a fiction and non-fiction book going at all times, and an audio book for my commute. I dearly love to read.
Same. I watch sports - baseball and basketball but that’s all. I prefer reading vs watching a show /movie
I listen to books while I work. My library has a great selection of audible books available.
Pretty cool huh?
I have been a reader all my life. I read every night before going to sleep. So many wonderful novels to read my list is long!
Likewise!
I love reading and escaping for a bit Where else can you fall in love with a hot and dreamy stranger, who shares his house and money and flies you around the world to collect cats and dogs. Then you encounter mermaids who turn out to be killers… when you run you get transported back in time. 😜🤪
Saving me every day
I want to get there again
My two favorite books are...Say A Prayer for Owen Meany and Of Human Bondage. But I usually read mysteries. I used to go to the library and pick an author and read all their books. 😁
I loved Of Human Bondage and Maugham in general. I read it at Burning Man. Not sure that's what BM is for but it was for me.
I felt Phillip's pain. I read it over 45 years ago and what stays with me is him walking/limping with his shoulders hunched from the yard into school.
Don't know if I'm a marvel but I don't feel right unless I have at least one good book to read. Like many people I spend too much time on social media, I don't watch TV, so a book is a welcome and refreshing break for me.
I read for pleasure but predominantly I read non-fiction . Just finished The Barn by Wright Thompson , an account of the history of the barn and people involved in the murder of Emmit Till . Fascinating read .
Thanks. Added to my list!
I needed to hear this.
I used to read a book every 2 days but just can't anymore. I have started so many and cannot concentrate.
When I am reading a book, I am aware of nothing else around me, drives my family nuts.
Books are where I go when I need a break from the atrocities happening right here in our own country ☹️
Every day. Do not watch tv if I can help it.
Just about finished with “you like it darker” Stephen King. 😊
Nothing feels like holding a book open and enjoying a great read and pausing using a bookmark to note the page while you put the kettle on 👍🏻👏👏
I gave up television close to 55 years ago and have never looked back. I am now retired, and I read all day long - heaven.
Our TV broke down when I was 7 and my parents didn’t get a new one till I’d left for college (my dad wanted to watch Monty Python). It was the best thing that could have ever happened to me
Im begging for help with my pain n dbl vision in my eyes, but since I was seven I've been best friends with books. Im looking forward to being able to read voraciously again, if and when I get to!! Books have gotten me through the worst times in my life! 💜
Thank you. I couldn’t get through a single day without visiting the past or the future. Another planet or a fictional world and spend time with all the friends I make there.
Pleasure's all mine, Boze.
Why thank you very much. 😊
I'm rediscovering @stephenking.bsky.social Reading The Stand (for like the 5th time) man I love his books.
Thanks, I do read a lot of smut. ☺️
Absolutely Losing yourself in a book is one of the few true escapes from all the chaos. I wish everyone could experience that peace but right now, my focus is on helping my sister, who is very sick. Any support for her treatment would mean the world
Here’s the fundraiser link you can share: chuffed.org/project/1364....
When the country falls apart officially and completely, you’ll find me sheltering at the library.
I have a couple going as we speak. Reading is my heart.
"It was the best of times..."
You're welcome.
Not only does it take you to another place, you can learn history too!
Reading for pleasure is one of the things that helps me cope with all the chaos.
Really started unlocking this one this year.
it's the only way to get this disastrous, awful administration and government off my mind. Now it's one book a day.
Me! Me! Hey did you sign up for that new Bluesky bookshelf thing?
I kept my sanity during the first few months of this administration by reading about women WWII spies and brave women more generally. To wit, Madame Fourcade's Secret War, A Woman of No Importance, and The Woman They Could Not Silence.
For me, it’s Fantasy, especially if it plays off of actual real cultures or historic periods. I have books that I’ve owned and still reread since HS (now in my 50s). Currently reading Melanie Rawn’s Spellbinder.
Reading has always been a great pleasure. Nice to meet you.
Other than Bluesky and a few podcasts sometimes, I don't do typical entertainment culture stuff. Reading is my main source of relaxation and factual info. Currently I'm reading "Middlemarch," a masterpiece novel by George Elliot. Always reading Mother Jones, The New Yorker, The Atlantic.
I manage to distract myself with a book on the subway to and from work every day.
Reading is the most affordable form of travel and the only one TSA can’t cause the traveler to miss her flight.
I still read for pleasure but it’s difficult to concentrate. Gosh, have no idea why that could be?
I love being offline! You just don't go near a phone or computer. It's easy!
I tend to read in spurts. Nothing for months and then I’ll pick up a book and devour five or six in a row.
Do audiobooks count? I tend to have difficulties with pages of text. (Not sure if the ADD or Autism.) But listening to the original Sherlock Holmes books has been really fun. And Arsene Lupin, to a slightly less extent. (Very much of it's time.)
Audiobooks absolutely count!
Oftentimes it's one of the only true outlets of escapism for me - that and gaming
I have a growing TBR pile only because the illness I went thru caused insane dry eye, which made it impossible to read for more than a few minutes and my attention span got shot. Better now and working on it.
