I was struck by trump: without the tariffs the country would cease to exist. (Or some such nonsense.) If they couldn't speak in hyperbolic doomsday scenarios they'd have nothing to say.

And worse - what they are saying and doing are the things initiating the collapse - higher prices, alienating our allies, aligning with authoritarians like Putin (rolling out the red carpet for him!) It's as if we've become the USSR, in terms of lying to the public about everything.
