Almost all current American manufacturing is highly specialized. That is a good thing it means they are relatively (for manufacturing worldwide) very lucrative gigs. But also we're destroying it and gaining nothing in particular. So yah its ironic. Irony sucks www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jne9...

The division of labor and the specialization is like the first chapter of The Wealth of Nations, which is supposedly the Capitalist Bible (TM). But like the actual Bible, few who claim to follow it have actually read it or understand its main points.

You may have read it, but the “do everything yourself, but any taxes are socialism” crowd hasn’t ;)

In addition to first chapter stuff, says specialization makes us "as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human creature to become". Part of why liberal arts is so very valuable in these times of STEM STEM STEM. Terrorists have a high % of engineering degrees...

Ahh the “renaissance man”. LA should be taught more and emphasized more but everyone isn’t interested in everything and that’s ok. We would need to provide much more leasure time and allow less production if we wanted a society full of generalists. US can’t even provide basics for everyone.

We have enough leisure time. People just spend it on TikTok and other Soma-like mind numbing slop. If everyone read just one more book per year, it would be huge

I think that would have to wait until we have agreement that people should have housing, and food health as right. Then we can get to secondary needs.

We can do both strive for both concurrently, in fact - it is their nature as we need both the generalist and specialist to create a society that can even consider those basics.

That’s a worthy ideal but would struggle against possibility currently. It splits effort and resources. In the near to mid term the focus needs to be on one. We can’t even get the current specialist education to all equally or safely currently.

To say we should cease all other things to go for agreement on basics makes me think you’re a CIA plant seeking to slow progress via perfection.
