Is that an American thing? I’ve never seen it in Canada. Not even among my awful cousins.

Oh my god I didn’t realize this was an American thing but of course it is
Yep. Not a thing in New Zealand.
I did a side gig of wedding photography for years and I never photographed a wedding where it didn’t happen. Maybe 15% it was a sort of cute semi restrained nose frosting thing. Another 20% the bride also seemed to find it funny/clearly planned to do it back
The vast majority were cruel & catastrophic & happened after the bride v clearly communicated “please don’t smash cake on my face my makeup took forever/i don’t want to stain my dress” etc. The worst one he squished the whole plate in her face and frosting went up her nose & she was crying & choking
OMG, I'd be reporting him for assault.
I've seen a few videos about this with men grabbing their wives' head and forcefully pushing them down. Or even chasing after them and cornering them just to smear cake all over their face. And reacting violently when she does it back.
Yep saw all of those more than once! Including aggressive negative reactions when they got it back (never quite physical violence, which I think would have been my breaking point for dropping the camera and taking a swing, but definitely nasty cursing and sulking)
Which really shows that it's only "funny" when they are able to humiliate their wife and disrespect her wishes. Excellent way to start a marriage.
I have photographed weddings and it has not happened at a single one of the weddings I have attended or photographed. I wonder if this is a regional trend or more common in certain demographics, because everyone I know thinks it’s stupid, weird, and demeaning
Yeah I was going to mention that, these were all in the deep red rural part of Northern California, which I suspect skews things
Yeah, that kind of confirms what I had suspected.
Geez. Weddings should have a seven day trial period during which you can just say no, it never happened.
Hard agree. My own wedding was the only one I’ve been to without a frosting smearing, which is why I stayed married 🙂 (literally made this non-negotiable condition v clear from early on after watching all those weddings)
Bloody hell
God. How awful.
I think maybe it's regional? Out of like 50 weddings I've been to in the Northeast I've never seen it happen.
I live in the Northeast. Unfortunately, I have seen it happen. Usually it's at very casual weddings. I don't like it.

okay that makes a lot of sense
Yeah, it is. I'm glad it hasn't spread to Canada.
