Fascinating piece from a few years ago. Official from Kansas City transit agency reported a 35% DECREASE in incident rates on transit since they went fare-free. Why? Because 85% of incidents were disputes over fares. They also placed homeless service providers on some lines to do outreach.

Bus drivers themselves definitely benefit because they don't have to meditate fare conflicts

It also SAVED them $1 million per year on admin/maintenance of fare boxes.
