Similar thing has happened when asked about the books I am reading, and I am thoroughly enjoying scifi written by women, ideally not white/het/cis. The amount of people that find issue with that is insane! The books are themselves gorgeous though.

It’s wild! It was a light post about how I just keep picking the next most interesting looking book in my queue, so folks who want to diversify their reading could just try doing it on merit 😂 I DID get some indigenous recs from others, and will make 2026 an all indigenous authors year (all genders)

Yeah, it is an exaggerated reaction to a simply stated desire for diversity. Asking a few questions always elicits a hidden affinity with Rogan and the like.

The weird thing is that it’s a woman who went to Smith! A waste of a Smith education if you only read dead white guys! Her recs were silly levels of obvious, like Melville and Hawthorne. Which is funny bc I picked up a secondhand copy of Billy Budd a few weeks ago (not gonna tell her that tho)

There has been a definite shift towards right-wing values, including that of only reading from the 'approved' canon; worse, you see people from all walks of life, some that should know better, espousing such views, defending even what harms them.
