Oh wow, Meta's AI not only pirated all 3 of my books, it even pirated them in 10 different languages (plus other books where I had work published too).

This club is growing by the second as people find their works in the database. Meta stole from one of my books, nine of my academic articles, and a handful of book reviews. Apparently not translated versions though . . .
That is insane. Are AI algorithms not liable for copyright infringement? Or does that not apply since they’re not directly reproducing the material? Either way, that’s got to feel icky.
This came out due to discovery in a lawsuit from authors against Meta—so the courts are deciding that very question right now. There are close to 40 copyright-based lawsuits against GenAI companies I believe. (But transparently, obviously, this is not fair use.)
This is being litigated as wel speak! Most people say yes but... the genAI companies say no 💁🏻♀️
Of course, and I'm so sorry. Asked this to another Big 5-published author as well: I'm very familiar with this lawsit, Authors Guild, etc.—but I'm curious, what have conversations, if any, with your publisher looked like? Are there any legal actions they're specifically taking?
Because while authors hold the copyright.. .It's the publishers' books that are being pirated and stolen and used wholesale—aka not just the copyrighted text, but anything else associated with their publication of it, which maybe gets into their rights space??
Would just be really nice to get more big guns, like how UMG (normally very evil)--is doing massive lawsuit against music generation. I know major publishers' group filed strong comments that this is theft/not fair use with the copyright office, so not doing NOTHING. But curious about any insight!
My understanding is that they are pursuing this via lawsuits (the Authors' Guild is just one of them) and we're waiting to work through this in the courts. It for sure hurts them as well as authors!
Yeah, I was just curious if the publishing companies THEMSELVES are gonna directly sue (or have grounds to), as they have so many more resources than individual authors or groups of authors, etc. Glad they're at least (hopefully) taking authors' side, even if for business reasons.
I don't know enough about any of this to say, I'm sorry!
No worries, thank you so much (and love your books!!)
I'm sorry not to have more useful info! (You sound more well informed than I am, honestly!) and thank you for the kind words. ❤️
"Unhealthily obsessed with what these assholes are doing" may be a more accurate term than "well-informed" but the former may also result in the latter :)
Can meta be sued?
Never Give up
That’s crazy… criminal
Do you have any recourse?
As a published scientist, I’ve been wondering when we would start requesting royalties from the AI companies.
Mine too! 2 of my 7 novels, and a random academic paper from a different life!
Let the world's largest class action law suit begin.
There are already close to 40 of them!
Let's Erin Brockovich this shit.
Hold them fully accountable. You’ve got this.
