If we had a national healthcare system, we wouldn't need labor unions. And the Republican Party fights against both. Why do heads of labor unions vote against their own interest?

Yes, you would. They're two entirely different things.
I get that part. But a national healthcare system would mitigate so many things that are broken in this country.
Also: work rules and traditional pensions or retirement contributions. As to voting Republican, most heads of labor unions don’t—except in some of the trades. When that happens, union members can vote them out. People tend to forget that, bottom line, the union IS its members.
As essential as healthcare is, labor unions get us so much more: better wages and hours, safety on the job, equal pay, and in more enlightened places we “bargain for the common good” for things like climate mitigation and employer contributions to the community.
