This movie is hard to watch because it's unsparing in showing the mistakes of the commanders but it's still intended to portray the commanders who did their best to kill the most americans as heroes. No, fuck you, they should have ordered a surrender.

Shigeru Mizuki's "Onwards Towards Our Noble Deaths" by an actual Imperial Army vet is much better on this. He's very openly contemptuous of the officers that wasted so many lives for nothing.

Oh boy, you should read about the Aleutian Island campaign. They bonzai charged so hard instead of surrendering thousands were killed in one night and only like 7 Japanese guys survived.
