The UK and France declared war on Nazi Germany after the invasion of Poland but refused to fight. Remind me what happened next? It would have taken many fewer people and resources to defend Ukraine the way we're supposed to defend a NATO country and have avoided all this. The price only goes up
I don't disagree. Had there been an immediate (!) reaction by Nato in the fashion that we would imagine an article 5 response would happen, russia could have probably been pushed back, probably within months. ...
But today we can't even be sure that an actual case of article 5 would have the consequences that one would have imagined a few years ago. Especially European countries lack both material and mental readiness for a war with russia, ...
... and even under Biden it wasn't clear the US would go all in for defending, for example, the Baltic states. So I think we should stick to looking at the realistic options, not dream about what could have been in case the leadership, societies and military capacities of the west were different.

Russia has already declared war on Europe and gone beyond Ukraine. Europe just refuses not only to fight back, but to sacrifice enough to arm and fund Ukraine to defeat russia for them. They have prioritized defending russia more than Ukraine making them off limits giving russia the no fly zone.
The EU is still FUNDING the russian war machine pointed at them more than they pay Ukraine to stop it. What happens if they run out of Ukrainians - PEOPLE to sacrifice - because they don't want to sacrifice money? They protect frozen russian assets more than Ukrainian lives FFS
I agree on this point. All I tried to argue for is that it makes more sense to push for sending more weapons and money to Ukraine, than to talk about sending western troops - and be it just for a no fly zone - because the latter will not happen, while the former is at least partly achievable.
