No they do want them to be adopted, but they are volunteers who are maybe a little over-identified with cats and worry a lot.

Definitely. But I believe that most people should be afforded the right to at least one companion animal and animal welfare groups support that, even if it means rehoming sometimes. The usual reaction of "oh you cant afford a $4,000 vet bill? you shouldn't own a cat!" makes me crazy.

If you've looked up animal medical advice online, there's a lot of shaming involved, rather than actual help. Pets can get very expensive, and screening questions tend to exclude low income people. While other shelters that kill just keep killing.
