They had a supermajority for less than 6 months, with Manchin, Spectre, and Leiberman who refused to do anything left than center. Those three were ready to defect, and killed off the public option and many hoped for reforms. During that time they managed to pass Obama care anyway.
Yes, they barely passed it with a majority the size of which they may never see again. They've internalized the idea that they can't pass anything major without 60 votes, it's insanity.
They can't pass anything major without 60 votes. The Republicans vowed when Obama was elected to filibuster every single thing the Democrats tried to do, and they pretty much have.
Right, that's why they should have ended the filibuster years ago, but it remains to be seen whether they can gather the collective will to do so when they have a majority.
