Celebrating the rights that have been gained by this community, which has been so maligned and harassed, is not a bad thing. Celebrating the accomplishments is not wrong, and no straight kid or person should be offended by it. If they are, the question is why?

As a gay man who lived in a small town in (very) conservative North Georgia, this screed is as much a survival response as any ideological stance. If anything like my experience, Freddie has been fed a steady diet of tokenism and micro- and sometimes macroagression against gays.

This is an individual choice. I grew up gay in a very small rural Indiana town and never once had to turn against the LGBTQ community to make myself feel safe.

I agree it's an individual choice, and I'm glad you had a different experience. Myself, I stayed silent until I left my town in 1989. I'm not trying to excuse his language but perhaps offer those outside of the LGBTQ experience some context.

Freddie's rant offers up why visibility, community, and connection are important in the LGBTQ+ community today. We still have people lost out there in small towns everywhere, and this is the narrative their experiences are feeding into the next generations.

-2- In order to assure his belonging and survival within his community as a business owner, he has had to "turn in" to those views. What he does in that context is on him, but understand that not every LGBTQ+ person feels they have a larger community they belong to and can fall back on.
