I'm sure streaming it is not banned--people are saying books are banned but aren't referring to the US banning books. It's communities that are objecting to certain subjects (blacks, gays, women) in school libraries & schools, and it's just a faction of right-wing people trying to effect this.

I read Handmaid's Tale in 1989 in a university class. The professor said that it would be the most important book of our generation. Though it was a weird comment then, but seems like a prophesy now.
Unfortunately the people who need to know the story don't read - and the movie might be too far over their heads. Maybe we can come up with a cartoon version. I'm not sure if they lack insight or intentionally put their heads in the sand.

So, a bit of a personal story. I had watched all 5 seasons then developed epilepsy randomly in Feb 2020. Forgot all of the show. Rewatched it last year. OMG! Didn’t realize it started in 2017. The new season started-and I’m nervous to see where it goes. Such a parallel to what we’ve been through.

Nothing in the original book was new or made up. Atwood ONLY used events that had happened somewhere in the world before. She had piles and piles of newspaper clippings. There are some really good interviews with her on the web about it.

Education on history is very important. If we don't learn from it, we repeat it. While HMT is a great fictional book based on real issues, as are other books mentioned. What we are dealing with now closely follows the rise of hitler and the nazi party. Listen to the stories of the survivors.

I read this last week. Such foresight! I was both fascinated and horrified. I took some hope from its themes of change and community.
I was expecting the mass executions from the 1st few episodes to come true when the #fotus first became president. Made me very suspicious when #hangoverPete was made SecDef as he has no moral compass and thinks everything is settled with a gun.
Totally get that those early episodes really set the tone. Putting someone like #hangoverPete in charge just fueled the unease even more.
It's been around since 1985 but only more recently popularised in the USA, so it's not gone.

This article is a couple years old and it looks like it was the written form that was banned (at that time). I'm trying to figure out how a state would ban a global streaming service from being able to air something in a specific area
And for the record it is not hard to ban a show with the Internet service providers assistance. My TV doesn't let me stream my own plex server onto it because Spectrum doesn't allow it.
That isn't what a "banned book" means. You can always buy and own a book. It's just not held in libraries or schools. People aren't (currently) arrested for possessing banned books.

Librarian here- challenged books means there's a formal complaint- banned means it was removed from the shelves. Censored means parts redacted, restricted means it was moved behind the desk or was only lent via parents permission. Sadly this book has had all of the above done to it. TX. FL. And OR.

Read the book - was boring, sorry to say, but there were some intense moments. It was the characters' train of thought that lost me. Grotesque had more fast paced sequences. Grendel was my favorite book during high school - thanks teacher and I bet it's banned!!!

Having read Animal Farm, 1984, and Fahrenheit 451 in high school (my school removed HMT from required reading but I’ve read it since)- this is a horrifying reality we’ve found ourselves in. Read them if you can. And never let that fiction become realized.
And Octavia E. Butler's "Parable of the Sower" depicts what life will be like for us "little people" after the oligarchs have taken everything of value away and left us to fight over what's left.

My thoughts exactly. My mother is a product of Indian boarding schools. All of her siblings had to go as well. Every Tribe, every Native person has a story a generation or two away of dystopian disaster, and unspeakable cruelty. Every brown and Black person also knows that story.
i appreciate the thought, but this story just isnt my cup of tea. plus, we're living it, for the most part. my entertainment is more non-fiction or escapism to take a respite from the horrors of the reality we now find ourselves in. i think this show would just depress the heck out of me.

I read it when it first came out. I was working at the library then, and tended to put in a request for any book that was in demand just to find out. It was more horrifying than anything by Stephen King. Could not finish - peeked at the end as I recall.

Sadly, my family fled one of the countries the Nazis occupied and then destroyed. I've known how it ends since I was seven. I wish more people here got it. The children and grandchildren of European refugees from that time especially have no excuse.
Handmaid's Tale is uniquely relevant to the US, post Roe v Wade. Margaret Atwood has said she wrote it as a caution; but it looks like Project 2025 took it as an instruction manual. JD wants to monitor menstrual cycles, & prevent no-fault divorce (women have to stay in that abusive marriage).
