Every citizen in the USA should be obliged to read or watch The Handmaid's Tale. Now. Oh. Damn it. It's already banned in parts of the USA. When a book becomes alive. Too quick. It seems it's already too late for a rising. But I do hope I am wrong. #TheHandMaidsTale #USA #Facism

I'm sure streaming it is not banned--people are saying books are banned but aren't referring to the US banning books. It's communities that are objecting to certain subjects (blacks, gays, women) in school libraries & schools, and it's just a faction of right-wing people trying to effect this.

This really is true. If you don't have time to get and read the novel, sign up for a free or cheap introductory month of Hulu and stream at least the first two seasons. The first season is harrowing as you're introduced to that world and how it came to be. So many direct parallels to now.

Most works of fiction are for entertainment value Sometimes a group of people take that work of fiction and bring it to life A perfect example is how the entire right-wing establishment has used the novel 1984 as an instruction manual. See how this works 🤔

/3 So when you take out out of libraries, which are free to use, you effectively remove it from the people and their ability to read it. That is what a banned book is. And there are too many banned due because of fragile egos who cannot handle speculative fiction or lives not their own.

So say the truth. Removed from some schools and/or access limited to minors. That seems appropriate. The left has to greatly exaggerate their point because the truth is usually reasonable to most citizens. Adults who want to access the book can for free. But you know facts are stubborn.

The truth is access is being removed to all but an elite class of people in certain areas. That is a ban. Time to pull your head out and stop claiming it's all the left making this up; the right spent decades blaming the left for book bans, and now here you are, and exception, doing the opposite

Fortunately the world is getting a sharp reminder why far-right politics are dangerous and that fascism only offers empty promises. Far-right parties have started underperforming January. But it shouldn’t have taken another nuclear power falling to authoritarianism. No one should believe fascists!

That the show has it’s own issues doesn’t mean it doesnt have any merit. Heck, African nations I’ve visited so far the racism ran deeper than anything I’ve experienced in Europe and that was from different shades of black/brown to eachother! Should I now not take racism as seriously?

Snark. @snark66.bsky.social

The show does not have a racism problem. Neither does the book It just isn't telling the story you want it to tell. That's not the books problem. There was a very specific message to a very specific demographic. Books do that.

It does not, but the fact that you think it could does. (I mean that sincerely and as gently as possible. There is no kindness or respect you can show an individual in a minority group that will justify the misrepresentation and abuse of the rest of them.)
