Today is the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. On this day in the Lords in 1945, the State Opening of Parliament took place. It was the first for several years to happen in the Lords chamber itself. Between 1941 and 1944, State Openings took place in the Robing Room, pictured here.

Following the bombing of the Commons chamber in May 1941, the House of Lords lent its chamber to MPs while the Lords sat in the Robing Room.

In 1945, the King, reading the Speech from the Throne, said: 'My Armed Forces from every part of my Commonwealth and Empire have fought with steady courage and endurance... We remember especially at this time those who have laid down their lives in the fight for freedom.'

Following the bombing of the Commons chamber in 1941, the Lords lent its chamber to MPs. The Commons would still use the Lords chamber for several years until 1951 but State Openings returned earlier in 1945. πŸ“„ Find out more www.parliament.uk/business/new...
