To disclose this when it is not relevant to the story is to send a clear message to anyone who serves as an expert source, particularly in politics.

It really does. I'm glad you saw that.

What most people don’t realize is that most academic experts participate as sources because of some sense that it is important to engage in public communication, not because there is much (or anything to gain). Indeed, it takes time from things we do get rewarded for.

Right, I thought public scholarship was part of my job, if answering the phone when a reporter calls means the results of some public records search will appear after my remarks would surely make me think twice.

“Prof Strom agreed that health policy is important” (according to her primary care physician, Prof. Strom could stand to lose 15 pounds).

It’s really quite a disturbing orientation towards expertise 🫠

It is already the case that many scholars (mostly women and POC) shy away from serving as sources because of a fear of harassment. A tactic like this -& it’s a tactic - will mean even fewer people will say yes to media requests.

Ask yourself who’s left when this happens? The people who actually have something to gain from being in the news , for whom the opportunity outweighs the risk (ofc there are always exceptions). Is that who you want to hear from?

FinDoxx as chilling effect, must add to the "dissent is not allowed" tactical repertoire for future study. Weird that the Democracy Dies in Darkness newspaper doesn't include how much did Bezos donated, not just the headline amount, but the dark money SPACs, shell corps, etc., in every single story.

wapo didn't even bother to verify whether it's the same person who made the donation!

Updated WaPo standard: if your mother says she loves you, check and see if someone with her name and workplace loves their kid.

I guess it's bad to give to the party that actually seeks to preserve democracy!
