"were" is a key term. He detransitioned and was not on any HRT for at minimum several months before the shooting.

I’ve read the brainwashed quote over & over. When you read on, they were upset with and despised the way they looked. They felt nothing could ever make them a woman; they couldn’t afford surgery. It’s bothersome that people keep using it when the context isn’t fully understood.
