But I ended up reading it as Israel/Palestine with Israel state replaced by a Slavic nation to avoid being too on the nose.

I subsequently read online chatter to that effect, but if that was the intention it completely fell flat for me, not only because of geography but more importantly because it's so explicitly a conflict between two sovereign states that I kept wondering where the other army was.
