Here’s how it goes at my dentist: At the beginning: How often do you floss? I then lie slightly upward. They pretend to believe the lie. At the end: Try to floss every day. I pretend to believe I will. Easy peasy and no lecture.

Mine's similar, except when they ask "How often do you floss?" I just say "Not enough," and then they tell me I should floss daily and I say "OK." I agree with the OP, there's no need to be obnoxious about it.
