I’ve never got along with ActivityPub tbh. The idea that your instance is effectively siloed until everyone blesses it by interaction creates big problems when your instance can only see like 10% of things.

I'm hopeful for a world beyond that model of ActivityPub, and currently still co-lead of a new taskforce for an ActivityPub API, which would be much more similar to the PDS type of system. We don't need to stay siloed to serves that do just one thing.
That'd be good. I didn't go into Mastodon hating the idea, quite the opposite, I just didn't want to be on a central node. I had to kill my node because it was getting so little data from everything it felt like I was only getting half the story. Plus the shit around full text search made me dislike
I know mastodon people like hashtags, but they are actually pretty annoying for knowing what is going on near me. I want to be able to search around the network by searching "brighton". I do think this is mostly a solved problem now, but it was a problem when I was there.
