my example was intended to draw a parallel between Fundamentalist religion & Patriotism in the context of reasons to be willing to die for your faith or country. If it was about divide and conquer, that’s all doing fine without my modest contribution to the project.
Understood. I was just trying to highlight that patriotism can be a positive whereas with religious fundamentalism, much less so.
i would argue that cultural narratives like patriotism & fundamentalism are tools for both good or evil, depending on a whole lot of things. Sometimes both!
1/2 I could easily argue that almost everything is a tool to motivate people to a desired action. Superstitions were invented, in many cases, to protect people from the dangers outside a village, for example. In fact, one could argue patriotism was invented to protect from raiders.
2/2 In modern society, there are not many cases where I can call religious fanaticism a positive, but I can easily demonstrate where patriotism can be. Agree or disagree as you wish. For me, I'm moving on and wish you a wonderful day/evening/morning.
sure agreed, i’m just devil’s advocating for the sport of it, in real life I condemn fundamentalism , it’s always bad results with those guys & patriotism? That just makes me smile ruefully. Peace!
i mean look at the Shakers! Brilliant furniture, true, absolute devotion to celibacy. Downside, procreation comes in handy, keeping the fundamental sect alive-wise. The Puritans were fundamentalist, views so extreme they were kicked out of Europe. You must see an upside to that one, right?
