p sure there was an NPR story or sth that pointed out some of them are literally *designed* to be mean to you in specific ways if you don't buy brand-name products.

that being said, if things are evil (in a non-life threatening way at least) you don't mistreat stuff you use. you sue the evil bastard who created them.
