As AI comes in and takes the easy jobs first and then the more complex jobs second and then even jobs we thought they would be unable to do third, the American public is going to be destitute without some universal basic income or security of some kind. How bad it is I don't think we really know.

Capitalism is not so bad. But for some reasons people tend to go all-in. Especially Americans who have started to believe that the slightest touch kindness would destroy their nation. Healthcare, child care, safety nets (etc) are all regarded as constructs of socialism. And EVIL.

If economies have falling birth rates, it's not an economy, it's a pyramid scheme that treats people so badly they don't want children. In a way we have indicators that show us our economies are coming undone.

Eventually, with declining birth rates, it will be less a pyramid and more a diamond with fewer young people supporting the middle and upper classes.

Here in Australia we are at 1.5 birthrate, any group needs 2.1 to be stable. Which means we do not acknowledge how much a child is worth, and as a result, do not allocate resources. So people opt out. Which as you say means full retirement homes, but no staff.

Just read that China's current birth rate is 1.0. Wow. They are going to be top heavy with elderly people in a few short years with a current median age of 40+. Crazy.

Canada's is only 1.3, median age 40.6.

Capitalism is not the problem. A free enterprise that is fair for everyone is what makes us thrive and stay competitive. Greed is the problem. If we could regulate greed then our system would be pretty close to perfect. But when it comes to all about profit that is where it fails.

Unfettered capitalism is the problem, period. I’m all for capitalism but it needs to be controlled with proper taxation…and by that I don’t mean the middle class carrying the entire tax burden while oligarchs feed at the trough.

One needs more than specific "wants" to create a sustainable economy. State ownership is just another form of corporatism. Scandinavia has found a better way to balance enterprise and society, and it is neither unfettered capitalism nor unsupervised state power. It is social democracy.

He’s not completely wrong, with the right tax incentives employers would pay more. I say we increase corporate taxes to like 90% then offer massive tax reliefs for paying a living wage, offering benefits, having a retirement plan, taking care of your workers.
