I think the scenery up there probably helps. LA-CHI seems like a really bleak route but LA-VAN is probably pretty.

Even the dull parts thru the prairies were great. Went thru a snowstorm with low visaiblty for a day. But the train is roomy, food is great and seats comfortable.
