Forget smartphones. According to Mark Zuckerberg, the real interface of the future is what’s sitting on your nose. Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have become a surprise hit.

yeah, if by surprise hit you mean getting punched in the fuckin face
Please consider using the #ad hashtag for these proclamations. You know, for credibility and stuff. FFS
Is anyone outside of Meta employees buying this shit?
But is it really a hit if they're not sharing sales numbers?
It is a big hit - much like Metaverse and Hyperloop
Hate this ad for META.
No they fucking havent. These shits violate the “dont start nothing wont be nothing” clause of being around people.
The real winners are the people that aren't going to enter that race
I am currently trying to decide if I should buy gas or food because I can’t afford both right now. I don’t think this economy is going to be gunning to buy weird dork glasses any time soon
Not if you’re boycotting Meta 😎
Nah
Glassholes are still Glassholes. Nobody wants or needs this stupid ass shit.
Fuckerberg can piss off. So can Ray-Ban, for that matter. This is a total hard nope for me.
That is a man doing his best to advance upskirt photography
Well, if it's Meta, then nope from me.
Meta is a privacy & data security nightmare, and if anyone wants to use these, you’re risking your privacy to his benefit in the name of profit. My opinion. Think smarter when it comes to your tech purchases. These aren’t one of them.
Bullshit.
did Mark Zuckerberg write this
Forget offices. According to Mark Zuckerberg, the real workplace of the future is Metaverse. You will be wearing VR headsets 9 to 5.
I'm not sold on VR, but AR I'm convinced about.
VR has it uses - I love VR games, immersive experience is very cool. Also VR fitness apps finally made me want to exercise, finally workouts feel like fun, not a chore. But what he was proposing is moronic. Nobody wants to work wearing headsets.
But management will still make you go to the office.
These replies takes me back to 2008 when people proudly declaimed they had no use for smartphones. Everyone will have AR glasses, they will be very useful, they will also destroy privacy. It will not be these glasses, but, barring the apocalypse, in a decade, Zuck is right (only about this)
Fucking gross
Everyone recording audio and video everywhere (including bathrooms), with AI analysis and data collection. Going to be a crazy world.
I’ll bet against this
They already sell millions of these crappy things that hardly do anything, flash an led when on, and have terrible battery life. When they're cheap, record and AI-analyze everything you do, last all day on a charge, and provide a customizable HUD-skin on the real world...yes everyone will use them.
That’s also a huge “when”
I may be wrong. All I’m saying is I’d bet against it.
I'm not Nostradamus, and don't claim to be able to see the future, but there isn't a tech I'm more certain of rolling out and transforming society than AR. And to get back to my earlier point, with some people it feels exactly like 2008 and smartphones. Why would I want an app on my phone?
In 2000 there were academic articles about how packet based data (vs voice) was going to take over cellular networks. There is not similar research. Does joy feel the same to me.
lol, seriously? What makes you think this? I'm curious.
fuck you, you will not make me wear your stupid glasses. i hate smartphones
Everybody told me I would own nfts and crypto coins five years ago and how’s that panned out?
Do you seriously think AR glasses aren't coming? I get that many are fearful of them and don't see the point, but it's hard to believe you can't see they are inevitable as they're already rolling out in primitive form.
But there are a lot of tech products that were touted as the future and then never really caught on. Sometimes it has to do with the expense of the product and the state of the economy its being rolled out in.
I agree, but everything is converging on AR. Computervision with self-driving cars and other applications, miniature display tech with phones and smartwatches, the sensing hardware with gyroscopes/microphones/barometers/lidar, the battery tech from smartphones and EVs....AR glasses are coming.
AR glasses will be very cool and do many useful things. HUD for surgeons or putting together IKEA for example. Directions in your field of view. Recording and cataloging all interactions. The bad part is they will destroy all sense of privacy. Or at a min, transform it.
I dont think those are all cool or useful. Especially the recording all interactions. But also I dont want my brain chronically overstimulated by having shit constantly in my FOV. And since it would 100% be used for ads, I care even less for it.
Would you use a smartphone and social media in a vacuum? They had many similar tradeoffs, but you need one today. These will be the same, unless you're some old person or weirdo.
I think our disconnect is I don’t see AR glasses as a 1 to 1 comparison with smart phones. Again, I see them as a peripheral and not the actual computer. Phones are the computer. I don’t think AR glasses will ever be a need product, and as of rn, I don’t see them taking off either.
To me they’re just a peripheral w/o real purpose coming out at a time where really no one can afford them. That alone can be damning for a product. The only ppl I know who use AR in any form are mobile -Go players.
Going to be a while still. Today's glasses are just strange niche to make bad recordings. But, in a decade or so, when they start doing everything a cellphone does today (although I think we'll keep the phones too) then you'll see them takeoff. We'll be living in social media. Social media = IRL
This kind of feels like a Sinclair product from the 80s. Where it will take 30+ years and better companies to roll out anything close to the product that would be useful and take hold by consumers.
Yeah it isn't this product that's for sure. I'm not really sure why people are buying at this stage. When battery gets better IRL streamers would have a reason for them. Also lots of businesses to protect from liability/customer complaints. But we're not 30 years from AR.
Businesses are already using discreet body cameras but mostly to monitor employee behavior than anything the customers do. And I haven’t see any articles suggest it’s had a positive impact so far.
I don't disagree, but also don't think it will matter and companies will deploy them anyway. Imagine upsell prompts for waiter in their field of view, details gleaned from previous waiter encounters like kids names /food allergies etc. Going to be creepy and useful.
There will be no escape from Dr. Evil’s eye. 🥴
Hahahahaha … Keep hope alive Markie dear 🙄
get your stupid spy glasses outta my face you creep
Remember when Google tried this and we all agreed it was creepy as hell?? I miss those times
Proposed and disposed of ten years ago. “Now with more AI!” Fuck no don’t need it
Mark Zuckerberg should be thrown in jail
🤔 you’re kidding, right
Nonsense. Try a screen on glasses and realize it is a better accessory than main device.
Whatever
I'm good on the pervert glasses made for losers with no bitches
this shits for pedophiles
If anyone tries to start a conversation with me while wearing those, I will walk away immediately
Everyone who wears these is a massive cunt who deserves to be bullied until they stop
If I see you wearing this shit around me………..
..here we go again🙄
Let's stop listening to this charlatan.
I hate these
These are going to see like gangbusters during the upcoming depression. Forget housing, food and healthcare - people will spend their money on this
Screw Zuck.
No thanks. I will not wear a camera on my face for someone else's benefit.
Nope. If Zuckerberg is promoting it, I don't want it.
No.
More reasons to get off grid asap
Pictured: a far cooler inventor
every time I run out of material for my comic, someone invents something else that no one asked for or needs. Jokes follow.
Anyone who wears these, and records others, in pubic deserves a good brickening
You know how sometimes you put away your phone to avoid distractions? Now imagine that you need your phone to see.
Nah I'm just gonna buy the Zenni glasses that block facial recognition
fucking A! appreciate the pointer!
Hell yeah
What do you think Meta is doing with every action, every word, every image that those things are sucking up?
How far can one man coast on making a successful hotornot competitor? Pretty fucking far, I guess.
Fuck Meta. Not a dime to them, ever.
hey @wired.com why are you boosting the shitty surveillance gear of a groveling fascist boot-licker like zuck? is it because he went to trump's coronation and stared at lauren sanchez?
Seen this before still don’t want it
I would never wear such a thing, not would I trust anyone who wore them
I am not buying anything cocky zucky is selling. He can shove it up his.........
lol no
If it says "Meta" or has any connection to Zuckerberg, it's toxic. Take your fascist paraphernalia and shove it, Sicko-phant.
Fuckenberg can keep his glasses, I am never wearing carp like that
Fishing for likes with this reply
Made me laugh.👏
You needed it!
Yes I did.
No it’s not.
Nobody wanted these five years again and they don’t want them today. There is no race and there are no winners- only losers.
EssilorLuxottica (owner of Ray Ban and lots of other brands) shareholders win -- if they take Meta's $3.5 billion and run.
I think it is a stretch. Until we see them out in the wild, outside of tech centric regions, I disagree with that assertion.
Google Glass was popular in the same way
They are in the wild. Perverts use them to record people without their consent.
Not the full release version. And since it uses Meta AI, it’ll likely be destroyed by its own expectations set by marketing
black rayban frames, look like regular prescription glasses - lots of youtubers and instagrammers showing they are wearing them to "film" people and places - I would hardly notice if they didn't mention it.
I worked at the company so I’m actually very familiar with the product and they do stick out to me because I am familiar with them and I have yet to see them worn by normal people
Hey you @wired.com pieces of shit… Why are you doing the bidding of Trump you low down traitors? Attacking DEMS for taking dark money? LMAO. Fuck you pricks.
Those fugly things 😂😂😂
The same way we were all supposed to live in the Metaverse and pay real money for virtual rent 🤮🤮🤮. He really thinks all his naive users are stupid. Nop Zuckerberg, it's not going to happen and we are not going to use your own spies in our life, doesn't matter the form factor
What race? Who is asking for this privacy-invading tech other than those creepy pedo billionaires who own everything? Other than the incel weirdos who worship them, I mean.
When will they accept that no one wants these. Having my phone on nh face is my worst nightmare
A sentence that begins with "According to Mark Zuckerberg" is a sentence that is ignored following an immediate and strenuous eye-roll
It’s Mark Zuckerberg betting on smart glasses, like Meta’s Ray-Ban collab, as the next big tech interface over smartphones. These glasses are unexpectedly popular, hinting at a shift in how we might interact with tech daily.
No
fuck this product
