Why does China build faster than anyone in the world? Subways, infrastructure, just everyday things? Dan Wang thinks he knows the answer:
You can’t disentangle the reduced litigation from the authoritarianism. Trying to learn hacks from china is like trying to learn how to wipe my ass from my dog.
Let’s see: No environmental regulations. No worker protections. No unions. Slave labor. Not to mention corp. and govt spies steal everything from the west, ignore all global copyright/ IP laws, all while paying for all the “research” with nearly unlimited funds. Yeah. Can’t see how they do it…
Cheap labor and no regulation. 🤷♂️
Evergreen. need we say more? Emulating China is not the path forward.
Forced labor?
We know the answer. We just have to look at who is driving technology forward in America, especially Ai. Who is driving technologies forward in China? Who built the railways in America. Now that America is kidnapping, detaining, shackling of immigrants, nothing will ever be built again.
A nice flip-around from my time there was 'why is the historical preservation of neighbourhoods where large numbers of senior party members live so good?'
China = party profits the poor pays America = capitalists profit the poor pays
Um... Slave labor?
Because they focus on the tasks & education is a priority. In America, the Republicans have been systematically dumbing down America and stealing taxpayer money. No funds for building.

So, do we not want a globalized economy? Gotta be honest here fellas, I’m kinda losing the thread.
It’s just another one of those articles where “everything bad for the US is good for China.” That whole narrative is mostly just false.
Because they import all the engineering know how. You guys should look up who actually designed and built their largest buildings and infrastructure projects.
Hi from Canada; A focus on Engineering would mean a focus on Math; in the USA, that is going to take regime change. #sorry
No regulations whatsoever for the glory of the state? (regulations aren’t bad, folks!)
because their labor laws have no teeth and there is no reason or incentive for any local or national official to enforce them, so they dont? we're not really celebrating another country's speed to develop - achievable only by notoriously exploiting it's workforce - labor day weekend....right?
Recycled bs.
Well in the UK, we can’t build anything without costly legal battles that ultimately render the project unviable.
They steal land from people who cannot defend themselves. They force people to work in dangerous conditions. They contract with companies owned by party officials. Normal stuff.
Though, we do all of that too, and clearly they’re lapping us, so it’s not that.
its because they decide to do a thing via central planning and then people get paid to do it, they dont spend 3-5 years competing against various capitalist interests for who can bribe & cajole local politicians or benefit the right oligarch donors
The reason is that any time America wants to build something, dozens of corporations need to be involved and they all have to not only be paid to build it, they need to make a profit, their executives need a bonus, and the shareholders need a buyback program. This is the inefficiency of capitalism.
And they need an army of corporate lawyers to litigate any zoning violations, fight any regulatory oversight, etc.
Because China Don't Care. Fast trash is still trash.
Isn’t it because they don’t have any environmental laws and they use exploitative labor practices?
Authoritarian forms of government can disregard safety, building standards, health, and environmental concerns without recourse from the citizens.
Communism
The questions that also need asking are: Why is workplace mortality data so hard to get hold of in China?
Also, "Hullo, your town is in the way of our new dam. Bye."
That town was downstream of communism.
Progress is not moving over your town: your town is paving the way for progress
"Do you want the good news or the bad news?" -Um, the good news, please.." - OK, well, your town is getting a new high speed rail station and airport!". -Um, and the bad?, "Well, your town is under the new station, :)".

I was just about to do the 'Dave's already answered that' reply. Glad I checked first.
They don't mind people dying in their race for speedy construction.
You want to guess how many died when freedom loving capitalists built the Panama Canal? Or the intercontinental railroad?
Not be argumentative but none died making the Hoover Dam or that monstrosity of Mount Rushmore…
And on the discussion…and how little to no regulations always ends up hurting labor. Yes no deaths at Mt Rushmore during the build…buuuut “However, some workers did die later from silicosis, a lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust from the granite.” Ref www.jeanpatrick.com/mount-rushmo...
Except no, The "official" number of fatalities involved in building Hoover Dam is 96. These were men who died at the dam site (classified as "industrial fatalities") www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam...
Yes and that's why we made regulations to stop that sort of thing.
… how’s that going?
Not to be a dirty commie or anything, but come on, I’ve been in a workplace in the past decade, I imagine you have too, you’re an American after all, regulatory oversight is gone, if it ever really *was* there to begin with.
Agreed….when you hear stories of companies just budgeting for the inevitable lawsuits from their product killinng folks…we gotten tons really dark place

Their buildings and infrastructure are built to very low standards with rebar you can snap by hand and concrete that crumbles in your hand. They even have their own name for that type of construction.
I just remembered the Chinese call this type of construction a “tofu dreg project” which is pretty accurate.
It’s about China’s unmatched speed in building infrastructure like subways. Dan Wang suggests it’s due to centralized planning, massive resources, and fewer regulatory hurdles compared to other countries.
“Fewer regulatory hurdles” means more people are injured or die, but hey, here’s a new subway that is not safely built, enjoy!
Because they use shitty, cheap building materials that start crumbling while the structure is still being built. That material even has its own name, “Tofu dregs.”
