there are (at least) a dozen forms of magnesium so understandably article doesn't get into all of them but for people with long-covid and me-cfs I would encourage trying a less common form called magnesium-malate its malic-acid can help with energy processes (krebs cycle)

Magnesium malate levels remained high for an extended period of time in the serum. The commonly prescribed dietary supplements magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate had the lowest bioavailability when compared to our control group Brain magnesium levels were found increased in all magnesium acetyl taurate administered subjects. Magnesium citrate increased muscle and brain magnesium levels in a dose-independent manner. We showed that dividing high doses of daily administered magnesium compounds did not sufficiently increase tissue magnesium levels.

The FDA actually does regulate dietary supplements under DSHEA and current Good Manufacturing Practices, 21 CFR Part 111. They are also regulated as a subset of food and subject to the requirements of FSMA, which includes the requirements of 21 CFR Part 117, Part 121, etc.

Unless you have a specific medical deficiency you don't need to take supplements if you eat a well balanced diet.

Life hack: if diet advice is coming from an "influencer" or has a hashtag attached to it, it's probably best ignored.

It’s a trend where magnesium supplements are being promoted for better sleep and digestion, often mixed into popular drinks like the “sleepy girl mocktail” for a relaxing effect.
