We don’t need them. We have them. Just in case. It’s not like we can put them out for pickup by the garbage man. It’s an aging arsenal. Who knows if many of them are still functioning. Random question, out of 5200, how many of them are potentially dud? Inquiring minds.

I’m sure we would have been fine with about 520 instead of 5200. Not only did it cost a fortune to make 5200 but the maintenance on that many has to be astronomical.

Even at 520 those alone could destroy the planet if used. Hell five to ten if used could accomplish that. At the very least it would destroy the entire human populations.

You’re exactly right. I’m sure a defense contractor came up with some sort of bullsh!t scenario saying the government needed more than 5k and has been laughing to the bank ever since.

During the Cold War it was likely determined having that many would mean a dominant position as a nuclear power for decades to come.

And I’m sure that rationale came from a defense contractor or a politician on the take with a defense contractor. follow the money!

Real Talk: A few of them have to be fakes. Probably about 300 of them are just big metal tubes without anything in it. It’s the perfect con. You build a few real ones and throw in a few fakes. Take the millions and by the time they find out, hell they’d have to try to use them, so it won’t matter.
