And there's the catch-22. If you say you're a citizen and don't need to comply, they'll say they don't believe you and kidnap you nust like they've been violently kidnapping people who are just going about their day.

We really need everyone who can reasonably endure the hassle, to reject their efforts on principle and waste their resources by exercising your right to refuse to identify.
Exactly. I really doubt they'd ask me, given where I live and how I look. But if they do, I'm saying hell no. And if they want to arrest me, fine... they'll end up on TV, explaining why they're hassling a retired teacher who looks like everyone's favorite grandma.
Hard agree. I'm a older white guy with a military-brat accent that's been softened by 30 years in CA, a deep knowledge of law and a baritone voice that can take over a room without even trying. Cops call me "sir" when I stare through them. I'd be glad to tell them GFY, but won't get the chance.
Army brat here.
And I'll bet you still know how to turn the voice on when it serves you, yeah?
Yes, I'm not intimidated by a uniform, thanks to being the colonel's daughter 😎, and 31 years of teaching teenagers perfected my don't-fuck-with-me voice.
It's mostly because I now live in a beach town that's 1/3 retirees and 1/3 students, and within 10 miles of a lot of agriculture. People like me are not that interesting to ICE, when there are so many helpless folks picking berries just up the road.
Which is why, if I were anything other than a white guy, I'd start carrying my passport card around. If I were still in DC (I was born there, but haven't lived there in some time), I'd probably carry it around even as a white dude. I'd still refuse to show it, but it would feel better to have it.
Yeah, I'm a late middle-aged white lady, so I'm pretty sure they're not gonna mess with me. But this infuriates me and makes me want to scream and/or punch someone, which isn't productive, but...holy shit, this is dystopian.
