Guys, this chain bakery/cafe (ROUND) has bagels that were actually good and normal but they started putting... Whatever this is in them?? Ruining the flavor?? What even are these, they aren't raisins or any seed acceptable for a bagel. Idk what this is but it tastes like herby or salty or ugh bleugh

Does Finland have it out for you or something?

Long one is second image looks like sunflower seeds, pretty common in bread in my part of the world.

aniseed?? that's the first thing i can think of that a country like finland might add to a bagel and ruin the flavor (i think it would rule but i love licorice and I'm dutch so of course i would think that). here's a pic of bread with aniseed in it, looks similar to me!

aniseed bread (from https://www.csmonitor.com/The-Culture/Food/Stir-It-Up/2014/0103/Anise-seed-bread )

Exactly. I was ready to guess salmiakki before I saw the picture. Are you sure it isn't that? 😅

The one on the right kind of looks like pine nuts, but I'm not sure if those taste really salty.

Next time I'm just gonna ask the cashier, but I happen to keep popping by when there's a line and that would mildly piss them off almost certainly if I came up to ask a question and leave with no purchase lol

People need to know these things because of their allergies anyway, there is nothing wrong with asking

It's just odd that they're not labeled! Every bagel store in NY and Jersey have bagels labeled, no matter how obvious the flavor is visually haha

Well, that's 100% true, they should absolutely be labeled

can't you ask them before getting in the line? it's just info before you actually know what you're getting into

Asking a question to the sole cashier minding the queue without getting in the queue is effectively cutting the line....

I get why you'd think that there, it's just that in Brazil that'd be ok hahah I mean, it's just a quick info request? prob. no one will mind

ah you are unfamiliar with Europeans' customer service! I once asked a waitress how big the bread appetizer was, was it for 2 or 4 people (our party was 4) and she did not hide her "what kind of dumb fucking question is that" face lol Tho I bet if I spoke Finnish it would be seen as less annoying

ohhhh I certainly wasn't!! I figured it'd require a bit more red tape, but not that much damn, are you going to try another day hoping for no lines or is there an alternative close by?

Nah you get wayyy more rbf stares asking anything in Finnish. You are expected to know not to ask and just look it up yourself. Even - especially - if it's something you can't look up. I would leave feedback though, if enough people mention it's worse than it used to be they sometimes change it.

yeah, I'd say go for it because in BR we're all about samba and sacanagem but I myself would probably just try the nearest alternative lol

Update: I asked and these were sundried tomato bagels (ew) and "mixed seeds" bagels (🤨) I asked what seeds, and it's like sesame and sunflower and some other weird stuff but okay. Not terrible but not what I want :( just plain or sesame or poppy or cinnamon c'monnn

I asked "Why don't you label the bagels?" "Cuz they rotate out so often" "Ah makes sense" Me later, when not being told something by an authority (on bagels) figure: NO IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE, THEY RELABEL THEIR MANY DONUTS DAILY??? THIS IS ONLY LIKE 3% MORE WORK TO INCREASE SALES AND EFFICIENCY 😠

You'd think they'd label them just so they dont constantly have people asking what kind of bagels they are

Looks like flaxseed, but it can’t be if they’re ruining the flavor.

a jaundiced monarch @lorath.bsky.social

that might vary for some people. flax has a strange bitter/astringent/fishy flavour to me, and i can pick up on it in seeded breads. if vb is sensitive to flavours and finds it unpleasant like i do, i could see it wrecking a bagel.

So like, ONE of those is a flaxseed (not too offensive) but the longer one to the right isn't...

Caraway might also trick you on other occasions! If you see the spice "Kumina" in the store (or "Kummin" in Swedish), you might think "ah, cumin, just what I needed". But you will be deceived, because Kumina is actually caraway, while "Roomankumina" (or "Spiskummin") is cumin.
