That’s not to say people shouldn’t have access to public transit, I think that’s very important for metro societies and I really think Duffy would agree with that. But I also think denying that our subways have a crime problem is silly and ignorant, and it also puts lives at risk.

While you might be right partially, I don’t think that’s his point. He’s talking about opportunistic criminals that see subways as an advantage in more ways than one, from fare hopping to robbery, assault, auto theft (if the station has parking). Lots of bad stuff happens on buses and trains.

We come from the UK where public transport is cheap, accessible, & eco friendly - especially for seniors. It is the same in Europe. Before Trump, we used to visit New York regularly.
