Here is what I have learned in my nearly two years of living Out West as a sheep farmer: nature here does not enjoy casual visitors. If it's not trying to give them rabies, it's trying to give them plague or hantavirus or Valley Fever. Or just turn them into Tourist Jerky via dehydration.
If you don't have time to sit down and get acquainted and find out where the disease reservoirs and the water sources are, the West would just as soon you go home and stay there. It says it has enough casual acquaintances and that's why all the plants are spiky and the bugs either sting or bite.
And even then, you're probably sitting on a volcano and/or a fault line capable of easing a city. It's grand. 😁
It gave us the Western Fence Lizard. That's like the one nice thing that we get for the next 32 million years.
