When I was 9, my brother was 13 and my sister 4 our mother died and my dad received 3 checks a month for $50 each from SS. It was not a great deal of money even then but helped to cover child care so he could work to support us. Very dark times for our family.
My mother died when I was only 3 months old and I received SS checks until I turned 18.

Clarification: disabled children only qualify for Social Security if the parents income is below a certain threshold up until the child is 18. After that, they can qualify for Social Security with just the child income.

Medicaid & Social Security disability are separate programs. Medicaid is the 2K. If there’s a representative payee who receives the money to use on behalf of the individual, usually aren’t many issues. At any rate, SS is little $, unless a parent is disabled, and or parents have retired.

I wasn't disabled yet. Kid was. And it affected my ability to work (frequent behavioral issues). So kid qualified for SSI.

So true. My developmentally disabled brother who never could live on his own and then developed seizures in his 40s was rejected for SS disability twice until we paid a lawyer to help us. My understanding is that they just routinely deny the first application & you pretty much have to hire a lawyer.

If a child is getting Social Security, it means their mom or dad died. The money was paid by that parent. Payments end when the child becomes an adult. I'm sure most kids would rather have that parent alive than the money.

That was me and my 2 brothers- Dad died when we were 5, 4, and 3.
My father died when I was nine and my mother was still too young(53) to get Social Security. We received a small amount from our government and I believe it was what enabled is to get through some hard times. It does take a village.👍💙
When my dad died they told my mother she made too much money to collect his social security. And when she retires she has to decide if she would take my dad or hers. Well of course she is going to use hers she was still alive and working with 15 plus years before retirement age.

I know and the youngest person was my niece she was 16 at the time to recuse me of it but they told us she had to be disabled. So all his money he contributed just sitting there.
Children have to be under 18, but I think your mom should have been able to take a spousal benefit when she turned 62, if your dad had sufficient work credits.
But sounds like she had may years to go before turning 62 like my mom.☹️ In fact I believe my benefit was a whopping 18 dollars per month. But it was something.
I didn't know there was an income limit on survivor benefits! Seems like it should be given to the family no matter what. My mom died when I was 8 and my Dad relied on that money. He bought a house and had to raise 2 kids by himself. We lost her contribution to that.
It was just a small amount of what your father paid in to SS, lets not forget that.

It isn't just orphaned children. Some children are born with birth defects that will cripple them. Some are temporary, and others have lifelong debilitating illnesses. I have a friend who gets SS for her daughter, who has MD. Sadly, they see this as corruption and they're freaking heartless.
