Somehow, I knew from the first time that I met him, @zachweinersmith.bsky.social would eventually be the canonical nemesis of Elon Musk.
I don’t believe he wants to colonize Mars I believe his Mars rhetoric is a means to pry billions of taxpayer dollars out of the government It’s PR nonsense to inflate the stock price. It’s fantasy and grift masquerading as scientific quest. No one is setting Mars.
I believe both these things are true: 1) Elon Musk wants to pry as many billions of dollars from the government as he can by any means necessary 2) Elon Musk really is dumb enough and arrogant enough to believe he will be able to establish a colony on Mars some day
He is dumb and arrogant, I agree. His Mars talk is just a lame-o pickup line. I don’t think he believes for a second that anyone is going to Mars. Didn’t he claim he would be heading to Mars in 2025?
My question is why on earth do we feel the need to go to Mars when we’ve already fucked up our own planet? Why waste this money/time on this baloney rather than on repairing the damage we’ve done to our only home.
I feel like colonies, cities, even as far as terraforming, are all entirely possible for mars, its just i would never trust my life in hands of someone like musk. a musk built mars colony/city would AT BEST end up more like Total Recall. IE, shoddily built, leaking air, water and radiation.
Theirs is an essential book for anyone interested about figuring out exactly what is involved in “space settlement” and its intricacies. Think of it as “Mythbusters, Bill Nye, Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett vs Musk and Bezos”. You know who’ll win.
