say it again: 4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities demolishing higher education is economic sabotage

Have you thought about this from the republicans standpoint? That knowing stuff is dumb and gay.
its intended to be.
The regime wants people to be stupid & for the next generations to be stupid so they have no choice but to look to the regime for answers. The regime hates ‘woke’ individuals (intelligence) we threaten this type of establishment. But if we continue to not rise up & fight, we will lose to stupidity.
The Machiavellians understand the truth of what John Stuart Mill said: nearly all stupid people are conservatives.
All going to plan. This is the revenge tour.
They know. They want that.
Of course it is, but the point is to burn it all down and rule over the ashes.
Instigating an economic collapses part of the plan. The fascists want us economically desperate, exhausted and scared. It makes their job easier
*collapse is
If you're a Broligarch like Muck, Thiel/Vance, Yarvin, etc, you don't want people getting a good higher education, cos they might best you at some point. The last thing they want is competition or free markets. So pretty much all education must go, except for those few allowed in the Broligarchy.
They want to hurt people who are smart enough and decent enough to oppose their plabned return to Jim Crow. That's it. The sabotage is on purpose. They hate us and we should defend ourselves with everything we've got.
Higher Ed is also filled with women. Two birds for fascists with this one, take out the thing that makes your children stop talking to you and the thing that employs a massive amount of educated women.
And has been one of the major strengths of our country for many, many reasons. Trump admin attempting to throw it away or at a minimum extort money from all of them. There are not good enough words to describe what aholes these DBs are.
A highly efficient way to degrade the economies of zip codes that vote Blue. 60 of the 100 largest cities.
the destruction is arguably much worse for the economies in rural and non urban areas where flagships are the employers and the drivers of local services as well as of any local business growth
Much like the attack on the Ivy League universities with wholesale cancellation of grants is wreaking havoc on community colleges everywhere. Wrecking balls are not precise tools that consider collateral effects.
Also, spillover business. I live in a university town and at least three major companies, in tech and pharmaceuticals, have their headquarters nearby.
Recruitment is a major local industry get for college towns. The mountain town I went to college in became the Silicone Rockies in the 80s&90s thanks to Hewlitt Packard & NASA building recruiting relationships with our universities. That in turn led to more community college & tech schools
Which in turn expanded recruitment networks in the 90s&oughts, spurring a manufacturing boom that is still ongoing because of bio-tech industries. Your heart stint, pace maker, lab treats may just have been made at those plants that grew around our higher education institutes.
If it's going to happen they should start with the sports teams so it wakes up the Republicans.
I was thinking about how Columbus Ohio and Austin TX and Atlanta and Nashville have all been growing like crazy. They are all big college towns. Atlanta and Nashville less than the others. But still.
Which has made these cuts an effective way of inflicting pain on Democratic counties in NC. Duke is in Durham, and Durham is the bluest county in the state.
UAB is the largest employer in the entire state of AL. Duke/Duke Health is the largest employer in Durham and the second largest in the state of NC. Emory is the largest employer in Atlanta -- yes, larger than Delta.

This is why universities need to use sports as leverage in the negotiations. Threaten to cancel all 2026-2027 sporting events if these grant cuts and other bullying tactics continue.
EXACTLY!!!
march madness was the time bsky.app/profile/anna...
We still have plenty of time to play this card.
This is brilliant! Whenever I'm having a particularly shitty week (which happens more often these days for obvious reasons), somebody out there in the world is like "let's break this thing our enemy loves strategically." Maybe it's the teacher in me, but these creative sparks give me a lot of hope.
So true! Just followed you both!
Demolishing Healthcare is economic suicide, Tarrifs are economic suicide, everything they have done will destroy the US economy. Every federal dollar they take out of the economy will destroy 10 dollars in real economic activity.
It is nation suicide. The higher the education level in a country, the higher the standard of living.
If Trump were doing Putin’s bidding in order to completely destroy every aspect of American leadership… what would be different from what is actually w?
As a former Hawkeye, pretty sure Iowa City would cease to exist.
Also important to note how many of these higher ed institutions are the largest/most stable/only source of health care for their communities
indeed, universities ARE healthcare
A part of the econnomy, and country, the right would prefer not to exist at all.
It's my position that the policy of recession - through reducing the role of the military around the globe, recession in population size via anti-immigration policy, and economic recession - is an enabling feature for these folks. It makes America small enough to fit in their tiny fists.
💯 This is important.
I think about this a lot as people often look to set up their small businesses in college towns.
Thank you. I work in higher-ed, specifically with funding and making sure it reaches students. Our institutions being sold out by the trustees is a fucking catastrophe. Of course, most of the people making these decisions to cater to Trump have no clue how a college actually operates…
I rant about this a lot. And, I hope it doesn't come back to bite me personally, but it needs to be said.
Washington University, St. Louis’s largest employer.
And is why it’s so high on their list. Trickle down destruction
Not the fun kind either
The dumber the populace the easier it is to "govern". Just like the movie Idiocracy. I believe Russell Vought took that movie both an inspiration and a template for Project 2025.
it’s gonna make the trade deficit so much worse !
it's like our number two export, period, now in the shitter
It was never about the trade deficit to them. They are just lying and misleading as usual.
[Louder.]
Truth
In a lot of rural communities, a University brings jobs, music and sports.
📌
Those cities are largely democratic, so it's just fine by the GOP. The ensuing devastation will just strengthen their narrative that these cities are lawless.
not true of the states, not true of the rural healthcare systems that only universities provide
yes, good point, but that's not the kind of foresight the GOP has. Ohio State has faced huge cuts that will impact so many across the state but there are those who are positively gleeful about it, arguing if these services
and research activities can't stay afloat without a "goverment handout" then too bad. Many people who will be hit the hardest are living in a narrative bubble that has made them oblivious to the consequences of these policies.
Inflicting economic disaster and depopulation on blue states, and blue dots in red/purple states, is a major goal of the campaign.
