in retrospect COVID was managed more rationally and effectively by China, which was far more aggressive about restricting movement, which western media portrayed as authoritarian. the countries with some of the worst outcomes included Britain and its settler state former colonies, like the US.
seemed to me a clear indicator that American Empire was declining and China was not on our trajectory. with the loss of faith and trust in science and our own innovations and institutions, a mistrust of collective action and solutions was like an inversion of China's experience and response.
