The reason why this is my favorite puzzle is that moment when suddenly all the words fit. I can't explain the process. Sometimes it happens in kakuro. I put it down, and when I look again--voila!

I find that walking away from any kind of puzzle helps. I do it when something is stumping me for work stuff. I dont know why that instinct doesn't kick in on these puzzles.

Maybe it will after some practice. I've envied people who don't verbalize their thoughts, because this "thinking out" in words uses extra time. Perhaps this pattern recognition is working in another part of my brain, that doesn't verbalize.

I think that's probably true. I find that some of my greatest flashes of insight come when I'm out walking or in the middle of the night. I carry a little notepad and pen and have a notepad on my nightstand for this reason.
