Former Navy SEAL and โ€œFootballโ€ aide Matt Maasdam is running for Congress in Michiganโ€™s 7th congressional district (centered around Lansing) against first-term Republican Tom Barrett, an Army veteran and former member of the Michigan legislature, who won in 2024 with just 50.3% of the vote.

Maasdam carried the Presidential Emergency Satchel for President Barack Obama from January 2010 to October 2012. Hereโ€™s an article about Maasdam from this past May.

Maasdam is not the first former โ€œFootballโ€ carrier to run for Congress. Robert โ€œBuzzโ€ Patterson (USAF, ret.), who famously accused President Clinton of losing his nuclear code โ€œBiscuitโ€ in January 1998, ran as a Republican in California's 7th congressional district in 2020 and lost.
