I treat them as self-interested humans who correctly see that since 60s the Dem Party generally hasn't represented the interests of non-wealthy people. If you think rural whites in toto are too irredeemably racist to choose, say Sanderism over Trumpism, I don't know what the fuck you're doing here.

You're not wrong about the Democratic Party (or at least its leadership since roughly the 80s). But it isn't like the Republican Party has represented any interests of non-wealthy people that aren't entirely driven by spite.

I think @rev-avocado.bsky.social is just trying to live his life in a city, and these people have voted against that for some reason (that reason being spite). It's natural to feel some resentment over that. I certainly do!

Who is they? The mounting fascist movement is led by Ivy educated billionaires. If you want to protect your family, nuke Silicon Valley and the White House.

1) those Ivy educated billionaires are powerless without the backing of millions of “they” 2) no one’s defending the Ivy educated billionaires or Silicon Valley here. There’s plenty of blame to go around.

Ok, but this fixation on rural areas is strange and telling given that so much Trump/fascist support comes from, like, boat dealers in the exurbs and bankers on the Upper East Side. Someone's seen Deliverance one too many times.

The vote margins are strongest there, but I fully agree with you that Long Island is the cradle of American fascism more than anyplace else

They are too irredeemably racist to choose Sanders (or any other liberal) over Trump, yes absolutely.

If they think republicans have done a better job of representing the interests of non-wealthy people then the only interests they care about are segregation, misogyny, homophobia, and Christian nationalism.

I love Bernie, and I wish he was president. But if there were Trump voters who'd have preferred Bernie instead, they had two opportunities to go and vote for him to be the Dem nominee and they didn't. I wish they had done, I really do, but they didn't.

Anyway if they're self-interested, I'd expect them to pick the one of two parties that better serves their material interests, even if imperfectly. But they don't. They don't conceptualize their self-interest that way.
