the point isn’t that the maneuver doesn’t work at all, just that there isn’t much evidence that it’s better than alternatives. but that’s small potatoes really; the other stuff the elder Heimlich has done is much MUCH worse

Yeah abdominal thrusts were still taught as part of my aha CPR course like last year. I've also done the technique on someone that was actively choking on a piece of breadstick and it worked.

yes, it absolutely works! i’d hate to think somebody saw the above skeet and then decided not to try saving themselves or others modern advice is to start with supported back blows (see post below for instructions), before going to the more invasive thrust. but the heimlich maneuver works.
