weird though. I was told that AI was going to use a billion gallons of freshwater and increase electricity use by 30%. but here, samA just released an open-source model that performs well and can be run locally on a laptop. almost as if that whole noise was all bullshit, or something. who can say.

tbh I don't think electricity use is gonna skyrocket from AI and even it was it wouldn't be much of a concern but most labs are saying that their future models are gonna need giga training facilities. Anthropic said they're gonna need 2-3 GW of compute just for the next models.

like on one hand it's all noise but on the other it's also not noise that the big labs didn't contribute to when they're talking to people other than people with environmental concerns lol

My suspicion is that these companies know there will be these efficiency gains. They want the compute anyway so that once they really hit some form of intelligence they can operate a bajillion auto agents that start running complex business ops

Not saying this is what is going to actually happen but if I had infinite money to burn, that's what I'd be doing- use model development as a pretext to keep the money flowing. Maybe I hit The Breakthrough, maybe somebody else does. Either way, I want first mover advantage and capacity to operate it

Compared to mass EV adoption data centers are a rounding error.

What's funny is that big DC operators decided they stopped giving a shit about those sustainability targets. Don't see much touting of that anymore.

Gas gets expensive one time and now we will never try to take climate change seriously ever agaub

Yeah the training is what's really crazy in terms of AI energy use. Actually running LLM and image generation models isn't all that bad

there are a bunch of people in Memphis breathing NOx from gas turbines who probably don't find the environmental concerns around AI to be "noise"

The concerns of activists about AI conflicting with the urgent need to limit global power demand growth are valid, well founded, widely shared, and it sucks that you're so casually belittling of them.

Unfortunately electrical grids and watersheds are not perfectly magically fungible across the entire country. Why would they be spending capex on DC build outs with those externalities still?

It's training not runtime energy costs, this is almost certainly a distill or similar

Right. The laptop isn't going to be able to do much if it's not plugged into a high-speed data connection, referencing massive data stores.
