They are just completely incapable of handling any sort of change in their lives, for reasons I don’t fully understand if I’m completely honest, and so I want the power of the state to force everything to remain static (and their marketing plays to that - this is the appeal of the villages, fl)

There’s been resistance to changes for a while. Even changes that don’t matter at all like website redesigns. Idk what made conservatives start hating change even more, because I do feel like it is more extreme now. But it was always kinda there

i think part of the reason is legitimately a fear of aging and death—they feel themselves growing older, their children becoming independent of them, their bodies slowing down, and associate those changes with the changes in the world, yearning for the past because they were younger, then

and for the young among them, they too have hit the point where they are aging, and also want to freeze time right where it is, perhaps a little in the past, because they look at those before them and fear to become like them.

Yes but also - it's a statement about what change they are comfortable with. America *is different* now than it used to be, but it's change they approve of. It matches the idealized past they imagine

I think it's only natural for people to fear change to things that comfort them. For some, it might be a fear that the earth is becoming less compatible with human habitation due to climate collapse, and for the less educated, it's a fear Cracker Barrel may discontinue the Blueberry Pancake Plate.

Seriously though, throughout most of human history, change was undetectable within the span of an individual human lifetime. It has only been detectable within the past 200 years or so of our existence. And now, major change is observable within a decade.
