it's so funny how most americans are like "oh yeah things aren't great in DC but they'll sort it out" while people i know who've lived through state collapses, however partial, are like "oh you guys are about to go through some stuff, you know"

True bruh Same sentiment. bsky.app/profile/thin...
We have gotten very soft in the United States. And very stupid. We actually elected a soulless criminal – twice. And yep, we're paying for it, with plenty more to come.
:C
I don't know anyone who not seriously concerned about what is going on.
Still remember being in the hospital in an intestinal emergency right after January 6. Black and brown and/or immigrant staffers were freaking TF out reading the news. As NYT was running shit like "what they wore to the insurrection."
In 2022 at a conference I attended, one of the experts was completely convinced there would be political violence in the US by 2030. Everyone laughed awkwardly. I think about that a lot.
And, before anyone assumes I was grimly nodding with impressive foresight, I was definitely in the ‘awkward laughing’ contingent.
I regularly think about how far we’ve been dragged into the dark, and how quickly. I still have hope, but the hour is very late… 😬
The amount of times DC type thinkfluencers missed stuff over the last decade is very disappointing at best
Most people I know agree with the latter, it’s just that we don’t know what it is we’re going to actually go through.
I assume that's part of why states collapse
"As the name suggests, 'The year of six Presidents', was not exactly a stable period in American history." -The future's Mike Duncan
“The impeachments will continue until we reach someone who will do what we say” - god willing, congressional democrats in ‘27
I don't know what will happen, but I am pretty confident in saying that impeachment is a dead letter. We'll see armed conflict well before we see either a 2/3 Dem Senate or 15-17 Senators joining Dems to impeach.
I do think if Trump tries to prevent Congress from being seated, a Dem majority in both the House and Senate could get to some pretty interesting places assuming they abolish the filibuster
I really appreciated A.R. Moxon’s take on this topic. And for me, some of my greatest complaints against Dems in Congress is their attitude that they can’t be bothered to try to do anything because it’s not guaranteed to work. www.the-reframe.com/impeachment-...
i mean, if there's literal violence in the streets, senators might reconsider
Nah, they don’t get off the couch
Maybe? But J6 didn't faze them.
I mean it did faze some (but not enough) of them, and terrible as it is to say I imagine either a higher overall death toll or the mob actually getting their hands on a member of congress or Pence probably would’ve moved enough to convict
We were seconds away from Mitt Romney getting kidnapped or killed, and I think that might have been enough to convict
i think they'll take their bets on the "law and order" side.
With actual riots in the streets you can very quickly enter a situation where you have a quorum with far less than the entire body, but that is purely hypothetical.
i believe you are sadly correct. this is ALL heading for the rifle closet, if you ask me. what the 🇺🇸 really needs right now is a 2 wk general strike where EVERYONE is in the streets, the way the 🇫🇷 are when they don't like a government policy or position. so far, not nearly enough people doing it.🎯
Well see here's the funny part. That's part of the preparation for being able to go and live through state collapses and regime changes and what not. Humans are surprisingly adept at adapting to new norms.
Of course, it doesn't help that for many, MANY Americans, Washington DC might as well be some far off fucking country.
Neat!
Living in DC and being in the situation I am, I'm pretty sanguine about it. Life will go on- the vast majority of people will come out on the other side, and we'll rebuild and start anew. All we can do for now, individually, is be there for one another and make choices about what's in front of us.
It’s all fun and games until the bank runs start, then the shit has long hit the fan but the shit keeps coming. You’re just left wondering how much shit is there?
My gmother, had a trunk full of marks in 1922 in East Prussia. She would trade say a 1 trillion mark note for a loaf of bread, or the worthless million mark notes that preceded the trillion as kindling for the wood stove. No exagerration. That's how I how bad it can get. Just sharing....
Yeah I think more recently about the bank runs in Greece. But absolutely. Also here in the US. I’m in the south, I’ve seen and had at points confederate currency. Worth a smidge now, but after the war barely the paper it was printed on.
We really need to be wary of crypto & Trump trying to control the Fed. Those people know what they're doing and why. They aren't capricious old tyrant wannabes.
Absolutely. Even one of my most conservative pals agrees with that, he’s at the tear it down and start over phase.
Certain things do need to either be shored up and changed or torn down. At the least this administration has people wanting to understand basic things about govt. Apathy has been w/ us as long as I can remember and that's way back when "America " was supposedly "great" .
I am not looking forward to what is about to happen. Maybe if I get really lucky it doesn't involve attending a lot of funerals.
*nods in ex-Soviet*
who will be our yakov smirnoff?
You guys really think we will have an election? Elections in ruZZia are not elections, they are random number generators where putin picks his "opposition" and always wins. bsky.app/profile/marc...
Oh boy I sure do love living in interesting times!
What are you counting as a "partial" state collapse?
Maybe if the central government loses control of the countryside and only has control of the urban areas, something like that might be a partial collapse
Who/what is going to sort it out and through what mechanism are my questions, and I don't see an answer. It's going to take a sustained mass movement to undo the fuckery going on now and the window of time to act is closing.
Armed revolt. That's what it will take. Now you know.
The easiest offramp is a certain growing clump of clotted blood cells somewhere deep in Trump's sapheous vein.
