yeah like I think a lot of the reason the gun control debate gets so messy so quickly is that it's in no small part trying to solve a cultural issue (americans just really like violence, shooting and otherwise, each other) with a technological regulation

Like, the ability of other countries to pass gun control laws says more about their culture then the effectiveness of the laws.

there's also like a lot of people that could theoretically agree on a set of policies that end up talking past each other because they've adopted opposite opinions on the matter of guns, which is NOT the only issue like, mental health does play a role! and you don't see that get as much coverage

it also really doesn't help that legislation and regulation frequently dips into 'the internet is a series of tubes' level of imprecision and ignorance; it allows for easy mockery, big gaps, and ineffectiveness

I mean the easy policy solution would be 'men are not allowed to own guns as private citizens', but that causes *much* larger policy problems

Also ... there's no simple solution. You're right, you cant do a simple fix with a regulation without addressing the underlying culture. To which i suggest is the same culture that led us to J6 and this current regime. Lots of overlap & its messy AF (Apologies for jumping in here)

Gun people talk about whether you live in a ‘free state’ or not. New York and California, which have restrictions on the size of removable magazines and grips are sneeringly referred to as unfree. It feels like cosplay sedition.

Its late and i dont have time to go down this road fully.... alas I feel the place we're at currently with this authoritarian regime is a direct product of the NRA's actions since 1977 and I blame Marion Hammer and Wayne LaPierre for a lot fo it. Sedition culture is a problem.
