just in case anyone does need to know how to clear an AR, you drop the mag by pushing the oval shaped button above the trigger, then grab the charging handle (two lateral tabs at the top back of the body of the receiver) and pull back to cycle the bolt and clear the round in the chamber.

my thought on this has been to try to drop the mag and just pull the trigger to clear the last round, which seems way faster

Sky Marchini @sky.skymarchini.net

marginally faster, but I doubt any gained speed (short of literally fighting hand-to-hand with someone for control of the weapon) is necessary

fighting for the weapon is what i was envisioning, trying to clear the mag as fast as possible

See, my "fantasy day dream" was post disabling the shooter and safe-ing the situation before first responders show up. I guess I could just point down and shoot the round into the ground, but.....

You do NOT want to be holding the gun when the first responders show up. Get shut of that thing as fast as you can. Not sure you want your prints on it either, tbh.

Firing the round instead of clearing it might leave powder residue on you as well. Tough call. If the fight is over, I'd pretty much just leave it alone and stand guard over it I think.

You should always clear with the charging handle because putting a round into the wall or the ground is bad Either you don't know what's on the other side of the wall or you're likely not wearing earpro in this situation

If it's hand to hand combat, yes this works but simply controlling the rifle gets you about 90% of the way there rather than trying to hit the magazine release

I was definitely joking around but, feral hogs are a legitimate concern to anyone who lives in Texas or Oklahoma. 5.56 is probably not the only, or even best, firearm to extirpate than, but it is a legit use case for a carbine shooting an intermediate cartridge for larger sounders at +100 yds

To be fair it's the almost same procedure. You'll have two buttons by the trigger if it has a trigger safety. One of them will release the magazine. The other will render the gun safe it was disengaged. Drop the mag, pull the top back to remove a chambered round.

aug 30, 2025, 5:21 am • 2 0 • view
avatar
JackieDaytona @jackiedgaming.bsky.social

Generally your mag release be behind the trigger and trigger safeties will be in front. Some models like Glocks will only have one button, which will release the mag. Generally on the right side of the gun. Just watch the muzzle and remember to clear it if you need it inert.

JackieDaytona @jackiedgaming.bsky.social

If it's California legal you may something to poke since they require the button to be recessed to make mag changes a little bit more of a pain in the ass. Literally everyone I knew just took an empty .223 case and tied it to the trigger guard so it was a pointless law.

They will also cycle the gun, which if there's no mag in will just eject the round in the chamber

Ok so that’s actually correct; when AR pattern rifle is empty, to accelerate reloading and signal to the operator it’s empty, the bolt locks back and you just load a fresh mag and hit the bolt release (button right in the center of frame)
