the biggest thing i hope studios take away from the success of Sinners and K-Pop Demon Hunters is that, wow, audiences actually DO like and want original stories and don't need every goddamn movie to be a sequel or reboot

LOL they won't. They literally won't. It's a nice thought though.
My granddaughter loves Kpop movie
Reboots are easier and cheaper to produce it's more profitable for the parasitic bludgercunts that make the decisions. Want the enshitification to stop you have to dismantle capitalism
Original, but a random mishmash of recent trends.
Saw weapons in the theater with my daughter it was very well received
Great post. I am so bored with reboots /reruns/unoriginality that I avoid them at all costs. I also think we have become significantly less diverse and interesting across all cultural output so fully agree with this.
Two things can both be true: 1) The concept of movie "franchises" and "cinematic universes" is tired AF...However, 2) I'd still love to see a SINNERS sequel that takes a deep dive into the Choctaw vampire hunters
Which is also not to say I don't want recognized ones too! Puss in Boots 2 is one of my all time favorite movies!
I cannot STAND how every movie is a fucking remake. 😡😡😡😡 only good remakes: Evil Dead and It - they only worked because they took them from campy to straight horrors, and Mad Max because a. Tom Hardy b. Visually stunning
Audiences want GOOD stories. Plenty of original stories, sequels, and reboots are just garbage. Just make the story good.
There are no more studios. There are only entities who view movies as “content.” As such they can always raise money for films based on proven material. It sucks.
True
Duh!?!?
Yessss! One thousand percent!
Gahd I hope so!
Thank you 🙏🏽
This is why my wife and I find ourselves watching non American movies and series more and more. Bored of the formulaic same same and finding non usa content to be more creative with fewer car chases and 2 dimensional characters.
Or centered on whiteness
Annnnnd the characters don’t have to be white *gasp shock amazement*
Louder for the people in the back! 💜
They can even be animations
Or male dominated
This part.
👏
I'm afraid they'll take away that K-pop Demons Hunters is a new franchise to milk to death, and they'll pump out sequels of that
Yes! Character driven stories!!!!
Studios prefer a safe bet since movies costs a lot of money. They know people also like originals.
Agreed; they won't. Cheer. The latest Jurassic Park (#7?) has made over $800 million.
That happened with Parasite winning best picture. Only Sony didnt learn.
I heard they're making a sequel.............
Lots of good original movies in the past few years. People like to call out horror franchises but the best ones are often original. The past few years have been great for that.
Also, audiences like musicals if the songs aren’t just showtunes.
Not just original stories, but stories that aren't simply white washed.
Are you telling me you won't watch a K-pop Demon Hunter 2? I agree on the remakes, but who doesn't love a good sequel.
Some of the Writers and Executive Producers have either retired or passed on. Now the quality of talent isn't as good as it used to be, plus the quantity of talent is smaller...
Yes!!
but sequels and reboots cost so much less-cash and imagination.
Absolutely I detest remakes. It's lazy.
Or made for a broad audience so its just soulless. lacks substance and so unoriginal you don't even remember the names of a single character or a single quote.
Wish (2023)
Nice to know SOMEBODY gets it!
I really want another film in the Sinners world 😁
What I'm hearing is we need sequels for sinners and kpop demon hunters?
Yesyesyesyesyes!!!!
I agree but I’m excited about the “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” I believe reboot with new lead that takes place in rebuilt Sunnydale where everyone believe vampires & slayers are just stories. Sarah Michelle Gellar with be in reboot but not sure in what capacity. Super excited!
Thank you for saying what I have been thinking. Sinners, an amazing movie.
Studios assess risk. As those two movies did not have a white man with a gun or a blond woman who leads the cast they struggle. And rightly so, it's their money so let them make AI movies where Mel Gibson like actors dominates. 12 Years of a Slave is not really a film for Epping hotel protestors.
They will take from this a love of vampires and reboot Twilight with a new cast.
28 years later, together and weapons were all awesome
👏👏👏
Original? I like K-pop but isn't it a Romeo and Juliet western?
Not even close, good lord
Nope just gon get another overbloated IP. They’re gon push this until it bleeds, like with everything else.
there have been ones that i've enjoyed, like naked gun and happy gilmore 2, but it is a little annoying
laughs in owned ip
For sure! Movie producers have no creativity, they go for the money. Ergo, we have sequels that are bad.
Yeah but Elio proves the opposite point 😳😳
Zombie vampire crossroads was not a sequel or reboot? I mean it was great and all but it is a smash up of been there done that too.
Is k pop demon hunters a meddling kids situation?
... what?
They're talking about a sequel and a live action so... yeah
I can't wait for the sequel to K-POP Demon Hunters
There are plenty of movies and TV shows that are not sequels and reboots. Most of them. I can also show you innumerable examples of quality, original TV and movies that are completely ignored by audiences because it’s not recognizable.
ok
Pretty soon we’ll be fed K-Pop Demon Hunters 2, 3, and 4
And i dont want sequels to either of them!!!
Or that they should try advertising their movies
No matter how bad or dumb the original movie’s storyline or acting is, apparently. I don't expect every movie to be Oscar-winning and written by the modern version of Mankiewicz or Wilder; I would love a better, original film.
You're absolutely right, but dozens of original movies are released and go largely unnoticed by the general public every year. 😕
Thank you and me too. Sick of reboots and “amusing ourselves to death”. Looking for movies that leave me thinking
cf. www.smbc-comics.com?id=3266
On top of that, I feel like social media need to highlight original movies more. There’s tons coming out, but the sequels and franchises take up such a big part of the conversation
But what if the first 40 minutes of KPDH was them forming the group? What if we dedicated an outsized amount of the limited run time to convey what the show expertly conveyed in like 45 seconds? Hmm, what then? Exactly: better product.
Yeah, but good writers cost more, and they're NEVER considered the draw for any movie like the Director or Actors and Actresses. Like all industries, cheaper labor = better, regardless of the quality of output.
I agree, but i would LOVE a Sinners prequel about Remmick
I would love to see a back story film about the Choctaw tribe and Remmick. 👍🏾
Sinners was amazing.
Amen
…on the other hand, there’s Lilo & Stitch 2025 and the Minecraft movie.
Or a comic hero.
Check out the documentary coming in September "Video Killed the Radio Star" Gives the real facts about BTLS and Hulk Hogan.
They won’t, but SAME
But KDH is just Korean Frozen…? 🤔 It's great, but it's not *that* original.
I lowkey kind of hate how everything needs to have a sequel anymore. Especially in horror. Something gets even remotely popular after release & boom it needs a sequel suddenly...when they don't all need it! (I refuse to accept Megan2.0 sorry not sorry😂)
O there is definitely going to be a K-Pop Demon Hunters sequel... 😏
You forgot the insidious Prequel. I see you Star Wars.
The other big glaring take-away: THEY DON'T HAVE TO REVOLVE AROUND WHITE FOLKS. In fact, sometimes there don't need to be any white folks in them at all! Also, musicals rule if they're well done.
Someone make a Sly Full of Elephants movie!
Absolutely. I didn’t particularly like either but i desperately want people to be able to create new things, tell new stories.
People are desperate for something different!!!
I don't hate a good sequel, but I do hate onslaught of a half a dozen sequels that get progressively more lifeless as they go. With KPDH, they left it open-ended with so many topics & themes they could explore to make good, meaningful media out of, that, just like music, could help a lot of people.
I just went thru imdb future movies for the next two years and its looking bleak, fren. So. Many. Remakes and sequels. It was kinda sad.
Just finished Demon Hunters. What a fun, uplifting movie. Loved it.
True but sequels and reboots were doing better box office for most years. Studios chase the money.
Nothing has changed, only 1 of the 10 highest domestic grossing movies is original, 2 if you count Minecraft. Breakout hits are not the sign of a new trend, they are the exception to the rule.
Strange how they didn't believe in either project. Both films spoke to their audience and people responded positively in kind. Bizarre that original storytelling is not what they are wanting to release.
I think it's a Gen-X thing - we love our sequels and reboots
👋🏽👋🏽👋🏽
I sure hope not as I'm furiously working on the scripts for "Sinners 2: The Sinnering" and "K-Pop Demon Hunters vs. Jason vs. Freddy".
Huntr/x vs. Sinners: Blues & Seoul
Laughed really hard at this, thank you
Glad my ideas were different with writing “Sinners 2: Mortal v. Venial” and the crossover “K-Pop Demon Hunting Wives”.
The Sinnering 😂😂😂
Absofuckinglutely.

We can complain if it’s the year 2040 and “KPop Demon Hunters Part 5” is coming out. Still want original content that’s good but movies like this deserve sequels too.
Exactly. Not every movie needs a sequel, but sometimes, they're perfectly fine.
KPDH is only around 90 minutes long. That world contains more than 90 minutes of a story worth telling. Its when after 3 movies, with a 4th on the way, they announce the 12 episode sequel prequel series where it can start to get dicey
That's about the threshold, yeah. Once they start mentioning prequels and origins...
As always: "seek ways to capitalize on the runaway success."
I mean, if they want to give a blank check to the creators to make their dream sequel, I am all here for it. Like, if we're respecting creator intent a sequel isn't in-and-of-itself a bad thing.
They did leave it open-ended, with so many themes left to explore & fans, myself included, would love a sequel/prequel. I just hope they don't sell out & keep with the messages that everyone & their mother has been getting from this movie. Its helping a lot of people with real life issues.
I'd love a prequel about Rumi's parents, but twitchy about writer's vision getting co-opted by studio/platform's greed, focus groups, and market testing the second time round. First films are experiments, but they expect formulas for success after that. It'd be S(e)oul sucking if it happens.
A sequel here and there is okay.
but as long as there making money there gonna shove out every year or so.
Probably 🙄
The sequels and reboots are about Intellectual Property (profits) not because someone thinks we need another Batman or spider man movie or whatever….
Hollywood acts as if there are no new stories to be told, no young writers with new ideas
Also, this could be good for the upcoming Pixar movie hoppers especially the lizard meme is becoming so popular and it does have a chance to be successful, especially in March because it doesn’t have that much competition especially the new cat in the hat movie got moved to November
And also just have all to itself, even though we do have Project Hail Mary even though that movie is going for a completely different audience that hoppers is, and I know that hoppers is directed by the we bare bears creator Daniel Chong
Amen
Original is scary. Might fail. We're rebooting Gem and the Hologram as devil hunters.
I hope studios take away the lesson that music CAN be used to either summon or supress demons from the underworld and audiences are glad we are finally talking about it.
100 effing percent.
Except they care more about saving money on marketing via IP recognition
But they won't.
at the same time Elio flopped and that horrible Lilo&Stitch live action literally made over a billion dollars. these companies are never gonna stop making live actions and sequels because people keep paying to see them
What I hope the suits take away from Sinners and KPop Demon Hunters: Audiences love concept musicals!
Except not all musicals are created equal. We really gotta get away from treating these pieces of media as if they are representing a monolith.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
I love how Sunners is touted as being original when it's clearly based off From Dawn till Dusk - even the director admitted. Still a great film.
I saw it in a Tarantino-owned vintage theater and they showed the Dusk Till Dawn trailer before the movie (Blade too).
Yes!!!!! I watch so many Korean, Japanese, Indonesian, European indie and Latin American (those, IMO, have exaggerated amount of nudity and sex, but still great stories) because they have IMAGINATION. They also have education systems that teach them critical thinking! Canada also has good stuff.
Hopefully that’s the take away, rather than a commission for Sinners 2 or a Sinners / K-Pop Demon Hunters crossover.
🙏🏻
I really hope in the future they realize that live actions don’t always need to be made 😭
Or spinoffs/franchising
And some of us are just plain sick to death of the American “entertainment” culture.
Audiences want things that are familiar, but distinctly different.
That's what tropes are for.
You think either of those were original stories? You must be so young.
Here, here!!
Soooo tired of this generation just reimagining everything we already thought. How about a novel idea from these people??????
lol
“Weapons” is another original, gaining popularity. Made $204 million so far, and cost only $38 million to make. Not that I care, but I would take notice if I were a movie exec.
for Kpop Demon Hunters also an interesting story where the film was originally slated for a theatrical release before it was sold off to Netflix. The majority of the non-established IP films from Sony Pictures Animation were offloaded to streamers since the pandemic. Could have made huge box office
Preach it
What I hope studios take away from this is that they don't have to pander to white supremacist misogynists to make successful movies.
