That is the big thing. You could get locked up trying to quit. I think most people got out of the military during Trump's first term who were going to.

You’ll lose all military benefits and receive a dishonorable discharge which in some cases is worst that a felony conviction when you go to apply for a job. If the military decides your actions amount to desertion, they will get the FBI involved, and court martial you, which can include jail time.

Bars are probably less of a concern than having to pay back four years of college grants. You're right, they shouldn't do this, but if you've got a family that doesn't have a hundred thousand dollars to spare, not to mention it makes getting hired anywhere harder forever... I understand the fear.
