Why would anyone need a silencer for legitimate purposes? Why?

Just information, not support. Many gun ranges in countries outside the US require suppressors, to decrease noise exposure to both shooters and those in and around the shooting. Most places in the US they are very difficult to come by, heavily taxed and waits of 18 months or more….

Would make more sense to have to wait for the firearm not the suppressor. In Alabama you can walk in and walk out with an AR based firearm in 20 minutes, but over a year for a suppressor, seems backward to me.

So NICS is super fast there, good for you. And pray tell what do you think a suppressor does? Reduces sound avg 20 decibels and reduces recoil, seems to me it makes it more safe for you and everyone around.

Many say to avoid hearing loss, but there are cheaper alternatives. Supressors generally cost about 1k plus mounting hardware, so it's more about the look and bragging rights around other gun people. They weren't illegal before, but ATF had to approve each individually for a $200 tax stamp.

The short answer is that this was done to sell more silencers. The people writing the bill will benefit financially, so cousin Earl can look like Jon Wick.
