We're in this situation because in the first place, the leftists attacked Kamala Harris in the last election, calling the Democratic Party elite, establishment, and they helped get fascist Trump elected as they did in 2016.

Oh that is a FASCINATING rephrasing of Mamdani's "I support to right of Israel to exist as a state with equal rights", is it not
Boosted Lander's profile and popularity too - he lost but came out smelling like roses. Real "rising tide lifts all boats" situation.
Seriously...he came out every bit the star as Mamdami
When has Mamdani defended the phrase? I have only heard him defend a right to utter it, which is not the same thing.
I found so much joy in discovering these two guys, thanks to their team up. Really gives much more hope about what could be possible in our political landscape.
I mean they act like the left hated lander until mamdani made peace or some such nonsense.
The fucking projection of corporate media to accuse progressives of imposing purity tests.
See they view the establishment view as the correct view and if you vary you are demanding purity. It’s weird.
We do be imposing purity tests— but Mamdani’s campaign distinctively did not
"ideological purity" when THE GODDAMN OTHER LEFTIST IS TELLING YOU WITH HIS MOUTH HE DOESN'T AGREE JFC these media people 🔪
Centrist elites rallied around a sex pest and *terrible governor* rather than back a candidate who was exciting young people and nonvoters! How can you look at that and say leftists are the ones who who need to change?
We're in this situation because in the first place, the leftists attacked Kamala Harris in the last election, calling the Democratic Party elite, establishment, and they helped get fascist Trump elected as they did in 2016.
Maybe I’m wrong but I think there are more centrist Democrats because the Party has absorbed many people who left the Republican Party.
I'm not sure that many people left the Republican party. I'd be interested to see more information. It seems to me the split in the Democratic party is between voters and donors. The same donors donate to both parties and wealthy people want policies that favor wealthy people.
it turns out that the people who were already in the dem party weren't in the same party with those people for a reason, and that maybe the people who swapped parties don't get to make demands on the direction of the party they just joined
what're they going to do, go back to republicans? they just left bc of the same people who are still in charge! what kind of changes do you need to make to get those people to vote for you? none whatsoever!
they said "centrist *elites*" by the way. not voters. they mean Clyburn and Clinton
so the Dem party is now full of Republicans? that would certainly explain things
Leftists are falling for this pie in the sky stuff just like the right wing. Low rent! Free groceries! Please. How.
I sm always saying this but I don't get why everyone who is Democrat isn't for most /all of these basic things. What ARE they for? ICE and police doing random arrests? NYC only affordable for millionaires or billionaires? More traffic? No taxes except for the $ we use for bombs on kids? What?
I do also think a lot of voters are massively under informed, including a lot of intelligent people. They follow national politics but not local, and will just settle for the comfort of a familiar face who they believe to be experienced.
I understand a lot of it. The normalcy bias. The inability to FIND out more (a huge problem in local politics now as many journalism outlets have been killed or died). Assuming such-and-so must know what he/she is doing. Why do others trust them? We need to keep communicating on the human level.
That is in fact what they are for.
Yeah, rhetorical question. It is what they’re for. A LOT of us don’t like it. A majority! So they lie about what they’re for to make us like them. Some think ‘I’m for THEM but I’m not for THAT so they must not be for that either.’ But if offered another option, we go for it. Why they’re panicking.
I figured it was rhetorical but my ability to be anything but earnest about this seems to be vanishing daily
Oh, I love everything about your earnestness. It helps my sanity.
❤️
The thing is there were plenty of alternatives to cuomo. I did not rank Cuomo or Mamdani because I found acceptable choices amongst the others. In the general election it will be Mamdani for me.
Or for the love of God,... Why weren't Cuomo's ambitions kneecapped from the start? There HAS to be an oversupply of generic, nominally liberal business dudes in or around NYC. How did they not just dismiss Cuomo and pick literally anyone else? Laziness. They lost this primary because of laziness.
A lot of people in NY politics were afraid of Cuomo retaliation. This is also why he didn't get impeached faster.
Brad Lander was right there for them to coalesce around. Instead they went all out for Cuomo.
Lander is progressive so they would never back him but yeah Adrianne Adams is right there. Guess they are too racist for that
I think you also just have to factor in that most of them really don't give a fuck about the sexual harassment at all. And most of them don't care about corruption either. Some portion of them feign support for victims or accountability but most don't value it over anything else.
They find both the harassment / corruption aspirational, if they didn't they wouldn't hold such weird "starburst" feelings for Cuomo (or Adams, for that matter)
My understanding is that he is insufficiently centrist.
This was honestly the most positive leftist campaign I've seen in a minute, w/o the usual leftist purity testers like you point out. It's also significant that the frontrunners were all men (at least they got the most press).
Mamdani intentionally sought to unite with other demographics, which felt like a different approach than other front running leftist candidates.
TL;DR - I agree with everything you said for this one instance. I hope more leftist candidates take this approach in the future.
such as who
Mike.
hm i wasnt a front running leftist candidate
🤣 Well played! (Also how dare you dad joke me!!)
“Leftist purity testers” such as people who ask if you oppose fascism. Just terrible, how can they ask something like that? Don’t they know that fascism is good if Dems are the ones backing it?!
It should be possible in the Year of Our Lord 2025 to find a competent enough candidate without credible accusations of sexual assault.
There were several perfectly acceptable moderate dems running! The establishment and NYT could have rallied around Speaker Adrienne Adams! Instead they chose the guy everyone hates who had to resign in disgrace and made Mamdani a rising star.
for some reason when pressured the establishment always doubles down on the worst possible choice
You can write that if it’s only “centrists” subscribed to your rag and you’re worried about keeping up numbers.
So then the actual lesson for the left is beat them or make them join you?
Because you write for The Atlantic, for starters?
he does? www.theatlantic.com/author/micha...
Royal you, not specific you. It's a response to "How can you look at that and say..."
Sorry, what?
It's that NYC Dem machine that needs changing/breaking.
Without even looking at who wrote that article I'm going to guess because they are a wealthy liar advancing their own interests over that of… Well just about anybody. It's in the Atlantic so I figure I got a 95% chance it falls under that umbrella.
I turned on the Mayoral debate and the first question I heard directed toward Mamdani was about Israel which I thought was odd for a guy running for NYC mayor.
lmfaoooooo Every single time a Democratic politician posts on here, weirdo Mamdani stans start screeching "endorse Mamdaaaaaani!", but sure...
I seriously love Lander for that. Way to be a homie. And Zohran has a big enough agenda that I'm sure he could use a friendly face in some high up position that is normally reserved for insiders and kleptocrats. It would be nice to believe you have public servants in those jobs for once. 🥹🫶🫡
“Don’t impose purity tests!”, defined by centrists as a minimal expectation to maintain internal consistency with stated beliefs in universal human rights
